Simon Haunted

Simon Hantai is a painter born in 1922 with Biatorbágy in Hungary.

After the school of the Art schools of Budapest, he traverses Italy with foot and settles in France in 1949. He takes French nationality in 1966. André Breton foreword her first exposure to Paris, but as of 1955 it breaks with the surrealist group because André Breton did not want anything to hear in connection with the relationship between the Action painting of Jackson Pollock and the theory of the automatic writing.

Hantaï invents folding in 1959: the folded fabric, ruffled is impregnated of unfolded color then. The color which settled in a discontinuous way appears in glares distributed through the space of the fabric making exploit the same plan the white reserves.

From 1960, it declines its abstractions per series, they very white or are coloured, rough or fine, floating or geometrical. The first series is entitled " Mariales" (1960 - 1968). The second series " Fabrics for Reverdy" (1969). The third " Blancs" (1973 - 1974). And finally " Tabulas" (From 1974).

He declares:

"Folding did not proceed of nothing. It was simply necessary to be put in the state of those which do not have anything yet considering; to put itself in the fabric. One could fill the fabric folded without knowing where was the edge. One does not know then any more where that stops. One could even further go and paint the eyes fermés" .
