Silicon tetrachloride

The tetrachloride of silicon is a chemical compound, of SiCl4 formula. It is a colorless liquid, relatively volatile.

Manufacture

The silicon tetrachloride is prepared from Silicium and of Dichlore:

\ mathrm {If + 2 \ Cl_2 \ rightarrow SiCl_4}

At the time of traitment of the Dioxyde of silicon one uses Chlorure of hydrogen, this one can also be used in the synthesis of silicon tetrachloride:

\ mathrm {If + 4 \ HCl \ rightarrow SiCl_4 + H_2}

Reactivity

The silicon tetrachloride is a very reactive compound. In particular it reacts violently with the Eau (contrary to the Carbon tetrachloride)

\ mathrm {SiCl_4 + 2 \ H_2O \ rightarrow SiO_2 + 4 \ HCl}
