Silicon Graphics, Inc. ( SGI ), is an american company which builds work stations ( workstations ) dedicated to the fields of the Infographie, 3D and treatment Vidéo.

In addition to its machines known for their design avant-gardist and coloured, SGI is also at the origin of a Operating system Unix owner, named Irix. Silicon Graphics is also at the origin of the processors of the Nintendo 64.

SGI announced on May 8th, 2006 its setting in voluntary bankruptcy under the terms of chapter 11 of the American law on the bankruptcies. The nonAmerican subsidiary companies of SGI are not concerned with this decision. The objective is to reduce the few 250 million dollars of debts of the company.

Following this bankruptcy, the old buildings of the company in Silicon Valley should be repurchased by Google (which occupies them already…).

Since this " dégraissement" , SGI adopts a strategy centered on the implementation of solutions of calculation optimized thanks to their historical know-how in this field. Offer SGI passed from the MIPS/système processors of exploitation IRIX to processors Intel (Itanium2 for the IA64 and Xeon for the x86) /système of exploitation Linux (Suse, Redhat,…).
