Origin

The drawing with the silhouette, appeared at the 18th century is carried out by a feature traced around the projected Ombre face or body of the subject.

It draws its name from Etienne de Silhouette. For some the origin is explained by the fact that its enemies gave to his name to drawings the representative in some features, for others because Etienne de Silhouette had fun to draw the portraits of his guests on the walls of his castle of Bry-sur-Marne.

The portrait with the silhouette is a portrait of profile, on zone white, carried out either by Papier cut out or with the Indian ink

Thereafter the name will be extended to all forms of art:

  • shadow theater

  • Photography, it often acts of subjects in shade, with back-light.

This form of representation is very expressive.
