Silenrieux
Silenrieux (in Walloon Slinri ) is a section of the common Belgian of Cerfontaine located in Walloon region in the Province of Namur.
It was a commune with whole share before the fusion of the communes of 1977.
Etymology
Rieu (as a Walloon laughed , in Latin riuus ) means brook and Silen means either the Silenius god, or romanisation of Sigolenus, or the flower the silene or or 2 pre-Celtic terms " sil" and " ana" who informs a site boxed with several brooks in a narrow passage between tops and small valleys about and with the bottom of the slopes.
Old forms: Silino rivo (868), Silenti riuo (1197), Sillenrimis (1202), Sillenriu (1276), Sileriu (1387), Selenrieu (1391), Silentirivo (1445), Silenrieu (1456).
Economy
Silenrieux was a high place of the metallurgy of Between Sambre and Meuse; many traces of low hearths and buckwheat crayats are the witnesses of a industrice of iron during the Celtic, Roman and franques periods. We find there old marchets Celtic not far from the place known as " battefer". As of the period of modern times, we can follow the evolution of 3 furnaces and forging mills (in Battefer, Feronval and Falemprise). This industry based on the charcoal will close its doors at the beginning of the 19th century when the blast furnaces with coke make their appearance. The village will be likely also to preserve still today a artisanal Brasserie of Bière of German wheat and buckwheat as well as a beer at honey.
Site of a stopping and 3 Lakes of the Water of Hour, tourism is there developing.
History
With the Early middle ages, it was a field of the abbey of Lobbes and Austrasie, ground of Pippinides; thereafter, the chapter of Thuin was the lord until the French revolution and belonged to the principality of Liege for it. It belonged to the department of the Ardennes then of that of Sambre-and-Meuse under the French mode. At the Dutch period, Silenrieux belonged to the province of Namur and the district of Dining-Philippeville; this situation is always of topicality.
