Sihanoukville (Khmer: Preah Sihanuk), in the past Kompong Som , is the only deep water seaport of the Kampuchea, in the south of the country. The city is connected to Phnom Penh by a railway (230 km) in bad condition. More and more, the majority of goods transport is done by trucks on the very good trunk road 4 which connects Phnom Penh and Sihanoukville in 4-5 H of time.
With the Census of 1998, Sihanoukville counted 155.690 inhabitants. It was renamed in the honor of Norodom Sihanouk, former king of Kampuchea.
Provincial small town, it is dedicated to a significant tourist development. Its great sand beaches white make the happiness of the khmères families whereas the Western tourists leave for the diving around its luxuriant islands.
