Sigurd Jorsalfar

Sigurd Jorsalfar is a work for Orchestre of Edvard Grieg.

Grieg had in the beginning made up an incidental music for Sigurd Jorsalfar ( Sigurd the Crusader , telling the history of Sigurd Ier of Norway) of Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson. The music was created at the same time as the part in May 1872 with Oslo (then named Christiana), and comprised five parts. Grieg published three, reduced for piano, in 1874.

Grieg revised its music in 1892 and itself from it an orchestral suite in three movements drew, which was published in 1893 with the Opus 56. A revised version of the partition for piano of 1874 was published in the same moment, the second part being another drawn from the five original ones. The three parts of the continuation for orchestra are the following ones:

  • I. Prelude (In the big room of the king): Allegretto Semplice

  • II. Intermezzo (the dream of Borghild): Poco Andante - Agitato Allegro - Andante Espressivo
  • III. Go of homage: Allegro Molto - Allegretto Marziale
