During two centuries and half it was one of the most important towns of Sweden, being a high place of the trade and royalty. The old church built at the 13th century by the Dominicains in the Monastère of Sigtuna is still upright today and underwent only few restorations. The monastery had a great influence during the Moyen-âge, formant many personalities of the Church of Sweden. It also remains in Sigtuna of many ruins, and the structure of the old city was not reorganized as it was the case for much other Swedish cities with the {{mini XIXe}} and 20th century.

In 1187, Sigtuna was attacked and burned by pagan Pirate S of Courlande or Estonia, which contributed to make it lose of its influence to the profit of the towns of Uppsala, Visby, Kalmar and Stockholm. These same pagan brought back to Novgorod, after an animated tour, the gate of Sigtuna , set up since close to the cathedral Holy-Sophie with Novgorod.
