Signal 50
The Top 50 is a Hit-parade, the only official classification of the real sales of individual S in France.
Its development was entrusted to the Nielsen survey institutes and Ipsos of its creation on November 4th 1984 to September 3rd 1993. Since this date, it is IFOP/Tite Live for SNEP (National union of the phonographic edition) which establishes this classification.
True institution, its notoriety is due to the emission of such as made Canal+ of it 1984 with 1993.
It is Philippe Gildas, then director of Europe 1, which takes the initiative of the classification, with the assistance of Pierre Lescure, managing director of Canal+, and of Etienne Mougeotte, owner of the drafting of Télé 7 days. Signal 50, currently diffused on television on MCA, knew various times, on TV, out of radio, press and on Internet.
On television

The emission then beats records of audience near the teenagers who can thus discover the Clip S of the 45 the most sold turns. The classified artists often come on the plate to choose their preferred clips.
Each new Signal 50 is revealed saturdays with 19:30. Marc Toesca declines also this classification in week of the Monday to Friday. The classification is also diffused out of radio on Europe 1.
At the end of the emission, the " Signal must" , a summary of the classification, points out more the strong progressions, largest " gadins', entries. Each week " p' tits clous" follow Signal 50 for any knowledge on the discs which they buy. " P' tits clous" because Marc Toesca received mail addressed to Marteau ESCA!
Vis-a-vis success, the magazine Top 50 is created in March 1986 before disappearing in April 1990. After Tele 7 days , this magazine is the 2nd title out of press to diffuse the classification.
Parallel to the classification of the 45 turns, a Signal 20, monthly classification of the sales of 33 turns and cassettes is created in January 1985. This classification becomes semi-monthly in March 1987 under the name of Top 30 before becoming the Signal albums of 50 places in May 1989, which will become weekly on May 22nd, 1992.
Marc Toesca is supported by some chroniclers who replace it during his vacation:
- Yves Religious bigot (until 1988);
- Alain Gardinier and his heading Signal around the world (of 1988 to 1991);
- Corinne Lelouche and its heading mode Kelou kelou in 1988 and 1989;
- Cecile Teysseyre and her chronicle on the pewters Hello Cecile of 1989 to 1991.
- Valerie Payet the last week of July 1990
Lastly, every evening, there is a play, the " Coke Cola Signal ||Quizz]] ".
At the end of seven years with the orders of the classification, Marc Toesca decides to leave the fine ship June 1991. He then presents his last emission since Los Angeles to the sides of Randy Newman.
Canal+ (September 2nd, 1991 - September 3rd, 1993)

The stress is laid the Signal Albums in week, Signal 50 being only diffused saturdays.
The two organizers mèlent humor with the musical topicality.
Each Monday a guest resulting from another medium that of the music comes to deliver its opinion on the last albums entered to the Signal, they choose also 3 clips among the Signal Albums.
The other evenings of the week, Yvan Bolloch discusses with an artist on the orange settee the studio and it offers to them a gift at the end of the interview.
Tuesday, Bruno goes down in the street and requests from the passer by their opinion on a musical topic, it is the heading " Camera urbaine"
Wednesday, it is the report of Bruno.
Thursday, all musical information is compiled in the " news news".
Friday, the emission starts as of 18:30 (against 18:50 of the Monday to Thursday). One Friday out of 2, it is the revelation of the Signal Albums. From the Friday, May 22, 1992, the Signal Albums becomes weekly.
And finally saturdays, as of 19:30, Yvan Bolloc' H reveals the classification of Signal 50. Bruno Solo finds itself in the elevator of the studio, it Co animates the emission by making sketches and invents characters, of which that of Bruno 2000, stimulating in the shopping malls. He is sometimes shouldered by Gus which officiates now in the emission " Groland ".
The " Coke Cola Signal Quizz" , become the " play Cola" Coke; disappears on Tuesday, March 25, 1992.
Cécile Teysseyre presents the emission during the summers 1991, 1992 and 1993, it replaces also our 2 accomplices from January 27th to February 3rd, 1992. Its knowledge of the classifications gives again musical credibility with the emission in the spirit of the period " Toesca".
Myriam Lafare presents the emission from February 6th to 13rd 1993.
Judging that Signal n°1, subsidiary of Europe 1 producing station of the tele emission, does not invest enough in the installation of an electronic system, the SNEP takes in December 1992, in the greatest secrecy, the decision to assemble its own Top!
Weakened by the fall of the sales the individual ones, touched by the fall of the emission of Channel more, it returns the heart on Friday, September 3, 1993.
It is Cécile Teysseyre who present the last emission and reveal the 148ème and last Signal Albums on the encrypted chain. Wink with the history: Marc Toesca comes to say goodbye to the " p' tits clous" during this ultimate emission.
Signal 50 is then replaced by another emission presented again by Yvan Bolloc' H and Bruno Solo: the full one with super . But success is not with go and the emission returns the heart in June 1994.
France 2 (May 26th - December 2nd, 1995)

The classifications of Signal 50 and Signal Albums are now worked out by IFOP/TITE LIVE for the SNEP, the national union of the phonographic emission, and either by Nielsen and Ipsos.
It is Sam Z, then stimulating on NRJ which presents the classifications.
The emission is initially diffused Friday after the newspaper of midnight, then saturdays starting from September 16th.
The classification, which lasts only half an hour, gives only the progressions, the entries and Signal 5. Only three Clip S are proposed in integrality: the best progression, best entered, and the number one.
France 2 prolongs the night with various musical programs presented by Frederic Ferrer and Alexandra Bronkaers: Mixmonde, Musimix, Multimix. saturdays about midday, they animate Mixage.
All these emissions are produced by Jacques Clément for Signal n°1, the tele subsidiary company of Europe 1. It is the same team which produced the emission on channel more 2 more years ago.
TF6 (December 22nd, 2000 - June 28th, 2002)

It is in number 148 of the professional newspaper " Music Information hebdo" that one learns that future chain TF6 will start again Signal 50, are 5 years after the stop of its diffusion on France 2.
Cathy Jacob, ex assistant of Charly and Lulu on M6, are selected to present the emission.
It presents the classification in a metallized virtual decoration, inspired of the Hi-Fi material. An arm of juke box brings the small pockets of discs and the song of P.Lion " Happy children" was remixé to ensure the credits of the emission. It's a pity that the choice of the credits is not to relate to the title " Dream" of P.Lion, which was the old généique one of the emission time channel more.
Parallel to the 50 best sales the individual ones, Cathy Jacob reveals the 5 first of the Signal Albums.
The emission is produced by TF6 and Studio 1, undertaken pertaining to Lagardere, who always holds with the SNEP, the rights and the mark " Signal 50".
The classification is revealed Friday with 19:00 and is repeated saturdays about midday.
In January 2001, the Signal Albums becomes a Signal 150, and the Signal Compilations comprises from now on 40 positions.
As of July 2002, the classification of the albums is restricted with the albums innovations and whose price is not displaced. A classification mid-price of 40 places is born, gathering the albums at low-costs and those having more than two years.

Parallel to the Signal 50 , Ness off reveals the classification of the sales of albums on France 2 in the French adaptation of the Top the Pops English . No signals presented during the summer months!

In the press
Télé 7 days publishes the classification as of its creation the November 4th 1984 until its disappearance of the antennas of Canal +, of Europe 1 and Europe 2 in September 1993.
The magazine Top 50 is created the March 11th 1986. One can then follow each week the career of an artist of the Signal 50 which is in cover. Marc Toesca signs the édito magazine of his famous slogan " hello the p' tits clous". The pewters of the guests of Channel + are retranscribed in the magazine. The artists are interviewed by telephone, it is the heading " Hello… " , a personality comments on the classification of the past week, one asks for the opinion of an artist on the air of time in the heading " Signal there! ". One finds also a double poster aggraphé in the middle of the magazine, place or one can of course discover the Signal of the week. The magazine is also interested in the hits parades Europeans, English and American. Its price is of 5 francs and will remain unchanged until number 183 (September 2nd 1989), where it will pass to 6 francs. One discovers a new formula which revolutionizes the " p' tits clous" March 3rd 1990 (N° 209). The model is classieuse and is entrusted to Fabrice Guéneau. It is Jean-Luc Delarue which becomes director of the drafting. Alas, this excellent formula will know only seven numbers. The magazine disappears after 215 numbers, the last being published the April 14th 1990. Marc Toesca will not make any allusion to the disappearance of the magazine on the antenna of Canal +.
As of the following week, OK magazine will publish the classification and until in 1991.
In 1992, one can find the classification of the Signal Albums in the columns of the Express train then in the Sunday newspaper starting from the December 25th 1992 and this until its abandonment by Canal + in September 1993.
Starting from September 1993, it is not any more Nielsen and Ipsos which work out the classification. It is the institute Ifop Tite Live for SNEP, the GIEEPA and the UFPI. Shade in the table: this classification does not profit from any tele, radio mediatization or presses general public. Only the specialized press publishes the classifications.
Created in 1992, the magazine Platine publishes the classifications of the Signal Albums and Signal 50 as from January 1995. Elia Habib will carry out " chartroscopies" , kinds of comments of the classifications of 2004 to 2006.
Finally the professional magazine Musique Information hebdo of course publishes all the classifications of record sales since its creation with the autumn 1997.
On Internet
For a long time on Internet, only the sites of IFOP and SNEP communicated classifications, respectively those starting from 1997 and those starting from 2000. However, the former signals are not put on line. The site of Charts in France and MCA publish for their part the current classifications.Until 2006, because of rights of copyright, the former classifications could not be present on these media.
