Sigismond Ier of the Holy roman Empire

Sigismond of Luxembourg (February 14th 1368 in Nuremberg - December 9th 1437 with Znaim), Germanic Roman Emperor of 1410 to its death.

Wire of the emperor Charles IV and his fourth wife, Elisabeth de Poméranie, it is the third (and the last) Germanic Roman Emperor of the dynasty of Luxembourg.

In first weddings, he marries Marie Ire of Hungary, on November 15th 1385 which brings to him in dowry the crown of Hungary. Marie, alas, dies without him to leave of child in 1395. In 1408, he marries Barbara de Celye (v1390-1451), a noble Slovenien who gives him a girl, Elisabeth (1409-1442) which will marry Albert II of the Holy roman Empire.

Titles

  • Margrave of Brandebourg , as of 1378 and until in 1388, when it transmits the title to his cousin Jobst de Moravie, then death of Jobst in 1411 until 1415 when it transmits Brandenbourg to Frederic de Hohenzollern, Burgrave of Nuremberg, thus marking the beginning of the rise of Hohenzollern.
  • King de Hongrie , thanks to its marriage with Marie of 1386 to its death in 1437, after the assassination of the applicant to the throne Charles III of Naples. He directs a crusade against the Othoman Turks in 1396 but is put in rout at the Bataille of Nicopolis. At the time of the " Sabor strapping of Krizevci" in 1397, it made massacre, after its unexpected return of crusade, several Croatian lords who were hostile for him in order to be avenged for their “treason”. The Croats, indeed, had elected Ladislas of Naples to succeed to him on the throne of Hungary and Croatia.
  • elected King of the Romans (1410) to replace Robert Ier of the Holy roman Empire. It is in competition at the time of this election with Venceslas Ier which accepted forever its deposition by the Prince-Voters, ten years before and with Jobst de Moravie which is elected in a parallel election but which dies a few months later; after which Venceslas resigns himself to recognize Sigismond like only uncontested emperor. He will be crowned Germanic Roman Emperor in 1433.
  • King de Bohême as from 1419, following the death of his/her half-brother Venceslas what constituted for Sigismond more the big challenge of its life since, following death on roughing-hew it Jan Hus the Czechs revolt and begin the wars hussites which will last nearly 15 years. That is only in 1437, the year of its death, that Sigismond is accepted by the majority of the Czech factions.

The crisis of Christendom

To make put an end to the Great Schism of Occident, Sigismond convenes in 1414 the Concile of Constancy which will last until in 1418.

The council condemns as heretic the reformer Jan Hus who will be burned on one to rough-hew in July 1415 in spite of a safe conduct granted by Sigismond. This act will have thereafter serious consequences in the career of Sigismond since it will involve the rising of the kingdom of Bohemia.

It is also at the time of this council that a cardinal, correcting Latin of the Emperor, saw himself answering “I am the King of the Romans and higher than the laws of grammar” ( Ego sum rex Romanus and super grammaticum. )
