Sigismond II Auguste (Polish Zygmunt II August ) (Lithuanian Zygimantas Augustas ) (1520 - 1572) large-duke of Lithuania 1544 with 1572 and king de Pologne of 1548 with 1572.

Single son of Sigismond Ier the Old man and of Bona Sforza, born the 1520, it succeeds his father on the throne with his death.

  • 1529 Sigismond II Auguste is king King de Pologne at the nine years age thanks to the queen who wants to put an end to the elective character of the Polish crown.

  • 1544 Sigismond Auguste becomes large-duke of Lithuania in title, his/her father preserving certain important capacities.

  • 1548 Sigismond Auguste only remains sovereign after the death of his/her father.

  • 1551 Publication in Latin of the book Commentariorum of republica emendanda by the lawyer Andrzej Frycz-Modrzewski who dares to condemn the increasing preponderance of noble in the State, the constraint of the peasants and the social injustice.

  • 1550 with 1555 Offensive of the ideas of the Reform in Poland. Most of the nobility adheres to it.

  • From 1551 Sigismond Auguste controls Poland and Lithuania starting from Vilnius and of its Lithuanian residences.

  • 1561 the Large Master of the Livonien Order of the Chevaliers Carry-Sword Gotthard Kettler secularizes the Order and subjects its state to the crown of Poland like hereditary duchy Vassal of Courlande and Sémigalie (Pacte of Wilno).

  • 1564 Arrived of the Jesuit S to Poland. Alliance of the king avaec the nobility against the lords: the Diète of Piotrkow issues the return to the crown of all the goods illegally acquired by the Magnat S since 1504.

  • July 7th 1572 with Knyszyn died of Sigismond II Auguste. The last Jagellon, probably sterile, did not leave any descent of its unions with:

    • in 1543 with Elisabeth (1526 - 1545) girl of the emperor Ferdinand Ier de Habsbourg

    • in 1547 Barbara Radziwill (1520 - 1551) girl of Georges Radziwill and widow of Stanilas Gasztold died in 1542 which was its mistress before.
    • in 1553 Catherine (1533 - 1572) another girl of the emperor Ferdinand Ier de Habsbourg
