Sigave

Sigave is one of the two kingdoms which account Futuna, belonging to the territory of the islands Wallis-and-Futuna.

History

5.000 years ago (3.000 front J. - C), of the inhabitants of the littoral of the China of the South, farmers of millet and of rice, start to cross the strait to settle in Taiwan. Towards 2.000 before J. - C., of the migrations take place of Taiwan towards the Filipino . New migrations start soon of Philippines towards Célèbes and Timor and from there, towards the other islands of the archipelago Indonesia N. Towards 1.500 front J. - C., another movement carries out Filipino in New Guinea and beyond that, towards the islands of the Pacifique. The Austronésiens are undoubtedly the first navigators of the history of humanity.

The first European visitors of Futuna, recognized by the history, were Willem Schouten and Jacob the Mayor who approached the island in the launch on May 22nd, 1616. They controlled Eendracht, ship of 350 barrels, accompanied by Horn which made him only 100 barrels, and came from Holland. Already, with the approach of the island, they had contacted the natives and jettèrent the anchor on May 21st, 1616 in the embouchue of the Futuna river. The kingdom of Sigave with Futuna then signed a treaty of protectorate with France before becoming an overseas territory (TOM) in 1961 after a referendum.

Policy and Institutions

Tuisigave de Sigave has five ministers, playing the part of spokespersons in the councils, but they have an authority limited directly on the chiefs of village appointed by the princely families which can dislocate their king easily.

King de Sigave has a chief of ceremony and a chief of the police force.

Sigave is divided into 6 villages, each village is directed by a chief.

Economy

The economy primarily rural is centered on artisanal fishing lagonaire and food agriculture océanienne for the local needs.

Demography

In 2003, the population is of 1.746 inhabitants with Sigave.

The majority of the inhabitants are of Polynesian origin (97,3%). One counts also some inhabitants of European origin. The very great majority is of catholic confession.
