Sifnos

Island of the Cyclades to 78 marine miles of the Pirée. It has a surface of 74  km for a littoral of 70  km. Its top (Profitis Ilias) rises with 680  Mr. His population was of: 2000 inhabitants in 1985.

The principal port, Kamares, are on the west coast. The capital, Appollonia, are located as in the majority of Cyclades in height. The village of Kastro located in seaside was the place of residence of noble for the period Venetian, the walls external of the houses constituting a rampart as in Naxos for example. One can see the traces of the ancient acropolis there.

The island is famous for its potters and its cooks.

Siphnos was initially populated by Cariens then Phéniciens. In Antiquity, the island was very rich thanks to its money and gold mines as the “Treasury testifies some” to Siphnos with Delphes builds at the 6th century before our era. Mentioned by Hérodote then by Pausanias in its Périégèse , it was redécouvert by the French École of Athens at the 19th century. This treasure built among several small votive buildings with the shape of a small temple it in antis , i.e. the entry is done by two columns. Richly decorated, its carved decoration carried out by two hands was polychrome.

However, the mines became exhausted or were flooded and the island impoverishes itself very quickly.

In 1207, the island was conquered by Marco Sanudo which annexed it to the Duché of Naxos. In 1537, Siphnos fell to the hands from the Othoman . It was attached with other Cyclades to the Greek Royaume in 1832.
