Sierck-the-baths
Sierck-the-Baths ( Sierck in German) is a common French, located in the department of the the Moselle and the area Lorraine.
Geography
According to certain authors, the name of Sierck would be of Roman origin, however no discovery of this time was not made there. It is admitted today that the meaning of the Latin words “ circum ” and “ circulus ” corresponds to the geographical location of the locality built on the convex part of a meander of the the Moselle to its confluence with the brook of Montenach. This position, vis-a-vis the hill of Stromberg, with the doors of the Luxembourg and the Germany, justifies the presence of a castle-extremely which seems to have preceded the city. One locates their construction at Xe or 11th century. At that time, Sierck which depended on the archbishops of Trier became possession of the duke Gerard Ier of Lorraine and remained it until the Traité of Vincennes in 1661 with however some interruptions. The origins of the family of Sierck are dubious. Of aucuns claim it resulting from that of Ardenne. At all events, it appears at the 10th century and dies out about 1530. It is under the authority of this from an economic standpoint family that the city experienced her greater development, as well as architectural. Some of its members occupied of religious high positions, which was not of no importance for the city. It is necessary to quote for this reason Jean de Sierck, bishop of Utrecht then of Toul, died in 1305 and Jacques de Sierck, archbishop of Trier founder of the university of this city, died in 1456.
It is in 1295, when Ferry III of Lorraine grants a charter of stamping to him, that the city is surrounded by a strengthened enclosure, back of the houses giving on the Moselle forming defensive barrier. Until the end of the 18th century the borough will hardly leave the limits thus fixed. The streets are organized along two axes imposed by the rivers. Door of Trier in the North-East with the Door of Thionville in South-west, Grand' Rue follows the curve of the meander of the Moselle, while the streets of the Mill and the Tanneries border the brook of Montenach of the Door of the Pins in the place of the Old Market. Arnould VI of Sierck was at the origin of several major buildings of the area: the Castle of Meinsberg (common of Manderen), a long time main home of the family of Sierck, the old church of Contz-the-Baths, and with Sierck, the almost complete rebuilding of the castle, the construction of the church justifying inter alia its erection in parish in the middle of the 15th century.
The prosperity of the city, until the Guerre Thirty Year old had supported the exercise of many marketing activities and artisanal. The houses and shops that butchers, clothiers, tanners made build of XVe at the 17th century, give still today its character to the city. The fortifications having lost of their strategic interest at the end of the 18th century, a quay was built along the Moselle as from 1785 to cleanse the low city and to facilitate circulation; the frontages turned to the river and the doors were given up or destroyed. The city could then extend.
Chief town of canton since 1790, Sierck belonged to that of Launstroff of 1802 to 1806. The bombardments of 1944 destroyed all the houses of the street of the Jews and the Town hall. The Sierck-on-Moselle became only tardily Sierck-the-Baths. New name refers to the short existence at the 19th century century of a small hydropathic establishment to the site of the current station. Today, if the trade and the craft industry remain the principal activities of this small town of: 1665 inhabitants according to the census of 1982, the quality of its inheritance authorizes it to consider a development of tourism undoubtedly important for its future.
