Siegfried (margrave de Mersebourg)

Siegfried († December 3rd 937) was Count and Margrave of Mersebourg. On the documents which reached us, it never appears with the title of margrave, therefore it undoubtedly did not carry it officially.

Biography

Siegfried was probably the son of the margrave Thietmar, the tutor of Henri I {{er}} the Bird-catcher. It was named Procurateur of the Duché of Saxony in 936. When Othon I {{er}} is made crown, it places his young brother and rival Henri under the “protection” close to Siegfried. At that time, Siegfried was the second character of the Duché of Saxony after the king, according to the Chronique of Widukind de Corvey.

When Siegfried dies, Thankmar (his/her cousin and the son of Henri Ier) and Gero (his/her brother and the favorite of the king) dispute its walk.

Siegfried married twice. His first wife was Irminburg, the girl of Otton I {{er}} of Saxony and Hedwige of Babenberg. His second wife was called Guthia (Guhtiu). When this one became widowed, it founded the abbey of Gröningen of which it became the first Abbesse.
