Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui is a Danseur and Belgian Chorégraphe born with Antwerp in 1976.
After beginnings of dancer of variety show on television Belgian, it decides to start a professional training of Contemporary dance in famous the École P.A.R.T.S., rested by the choreographer Anne Teresa De Keersmaeker. Parallel to its contemporary formation, he works with companies of Hip-hop and Modern jazz in Belgium. Its style remains marked by this time, in particular because its not very ordinary capacities of flexibility even of reality contorsionist.
In 1995, the dancer receives the first price for the best solo of Belgian dance to Ghent, a contest launched by Alain Platel.
Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui belongs to this young generation of Flemish artists and Walloon which represents a new wave in the medium of choreographic art Belgian and European. Member of the Ballets C of B (the Contemporary Ballets of Belgium ), company of dance located at Ghent in Belgium, Cherkaoui takes part in it as a dancer but also as a choreographer. Adulated by international criticism, especially European, Sidi Larbi Cherkaoui works with the largest companies and the largest theaters which order choreographies to him. One can quote the Grand Theater of Geneva or the Ballets of Monte Carlo. By its opening to all the forms of scenic art, the repertory of Cherkaoui is fortemement personal, theatrical and eclectic, with for example the frequent use of the Plain-chant with its accomplice Damien Jalet. Creations of Cherkaoui are almost always in relation to the exploration of the identity that it is cultural, nun, ethnic, or sexual. Another constant of Cherkaoui is the humor, used in the words, the gestures, and the music.
In 2005, it creates and dances an important duet with Akram Khan, Zero Dismantles , which will meet a world success for the two choreographers going up of the years 2000. It autonomise then in 2006 of the Ballets C of B while settling in residence with the het Toneelhuis of Antwerp.
