Sidi Kacem
Sidi Kacem (in Arabic Sīdī Qāsim rear RTL ''' سيديقاسم ''') is a town of intermediate size of the North-West of the Morocco and capital of the province of the same name. Its inhabitants, " Kacemis" are 74.062 (according to census 2004). On the axes Meknès (45 km) - Tangier (210 km) and Fès (85 km) - Reduction (120 km), it is located at the place where the Rdom river leaves the heights of the plate of Meknès to engage in the large one and fertile plain of Gharb (" Gharb" mean in Arabic the West, compared to Fès, old capital of the kingdom).
Chief town of the " province of Sidi Kacem" (area of Gharb-Chrarda-Blessed Hssen) or more commonly of the " Chrardas" , the city is a manifold center of the cereals produced in the hills located at the East and North. The corn wholesalers bear the name of " locally; céréalistes". The city is also an active market in the South-eastern corner of the flat rich person of Gharb which produces citrus fruits, olive oil, cotton, beets, rice. The city has two important souks, that of Thursday, downtown, or one finds all the peasants of the area, and that of Sunday or one touve especially the citizens of the city.
The city was founded in two stages which were worth two distinct and always separate poles to him: Zaouia and the center town with souq Al-Khmis.
The zaouia of Sidi Qāsim
It gave its name to the city shortly after independence (1956). It is the tomb of a wise Moslem who deserved to be called Sidi (" saint") and the seat of the religious brotherhood (Zaouia) which deals with maintaining and to accommodate the pilgrims. The pious foundation occupies the last heights which dominate Rdom over left bank. Sidi Qāsim bou 'Asriya or Sidi Qāsim Moulāl-Héri has attracted with him the pilgrims for four centuries. Its tomb became the religious center of the Tribu guich of Chérardas arrived well later in the area. Around Zaouia and on both sides of the river, districts of farm laborers settled who work at the day in the large farms of the plain.
Petitjean
The proximity of Zaouia had to contribute to the success of the souq of Thursday (souq Al-Khmis) installed in the plain. It is in any case not far from the souk that about 1910 settles a village of French and Spanish colonists of which much came from Algeria. Their intention was to emphasize the rich person grounds of Rharb who were not whereas a marshy and unhealthy field of pastoral course. The city had a European cemetery.
One gave to the village of colonist the name of a commander of the French Army which had been illustrated not far from there during the " pacification" , Petitjean.
Close to the village was built a station for the new railroad to great spacing which was to replace that with narrow gauge railway which passed close to Sidi Slimane. This station was known like change place of train in the center of the Moroccan network. It joined together the three lines:
-
Sidi-Kacem Tangier
- Sidi-Kacem Meknès Fès Oujda
- Sidi-Kacem Kénitra Folds back Casablanca Marrakech
To the station was added soon a oil refinery . Who contributed to the urban development, by creating hundreds of employment. It is necessary to know that in Morocco, currently (2006) there are only two refineries, that of Sidi Kacem and another for Mohammédia (just in the north of Casablanca).
Other production facilities were born with Sidi Kacem such as for example a unit of repair of bottles of AFRIQUIA GAS, leader Moroccan in distribution of liquifiés gases and fuels.
