The Siberian division of the Academy of Science of Russia (in Russian СибирскоеОтделениеРоссийскойАкадемииНаук (СОРАН)) is a division of the Academy of Science of Russia. Just like the organization of which it depends, it was known before under the name of Siberian division of the Academy of Science of the USSR (СОАНСССР).

History

Under the impulse of the academicians Mikhaïl Lavrentiev, Sergueï Sobolev and Sergueï Khristianovitch which wished to develop science in Siberia, in May 1957 the Siberian division of the Academy of Science of the USSR is created, with a few kilometers in the south of Novossibirsk. Indeed, the Siberia had important natural resources but it did not exist there high level scientific center. In this place, the forests of birches and pines gradually yielded the place to the installations of the various institutes of division. In order to train the future scientists of the center, the construction of the Université of State de Novossibirsk quickly starts and the university opens its doors in September 1959. Is born thus the scientific city Akademgorodok.

The successive presidents of division were the academicians:

  • of 1957 to 1975: Mikhaïl Lavrentiev, celebrates mathematician and physicist,
  • of 1975 to 1980: Guri Martchouk, specialist recognized in the numerical analysis, the atmospheric processes and geophysics,
  • of 1980 to 1997: Valentine Koptioug, chemist and public figure recognized,
  • since 1997: Nikolaï Dobretsov, geologist.

Structure

Today the Siberian division of the Academy of Science of Russia counts 74 research institutes distributed in the following cities: With Barnaoul and Chita also some elements are. The center of Novossibirsk represents with him only half of the institutes of division. These various centers cover the whole of the disciplines treated by modern science. In January 2005, division counted 33000 employees for a little more than nine thousand researchers, of which fifty-eight are members of the Academy of Science of Russia.

The library

Division can be pressed on library of the scientific and technological State, most richly provided Siberia. The number of works available (more than fourteen million) does of it one of most important of Russia, even of the world. The latter are referred in the majority of the subjects having milked to the technique, science and the academic world.

A single collection of rare books and manuscripts are also safeguarded there, thus making it possible to apprehend the Russian culture.

The house of the scientists

The house of the scientists (in Russian ДомУченых) is one of the most appreciated arts centres Akademgorodok. This building fulfills several functions: arts center of division, room of theater, concert hall, sports complex, conference rooms… Two rooms accommodate the visitors: the big room of the smallest capacity of thousand places and of a capacity of two hundred places. The big room is intended for the concerts philarmonic, the stage performances, the International Conferences whereas the small room is reserved for the conferences of less scale.
