Sic is a Latin word meaning “thus”. It is generally used between brackets in order to indicate to the reader that the orthography has just been used, or phrases it previously quoted, are intended to be read or printed such as they are, and do not have to be corrected.

There is two use potential:

  • is a fault was made by the original author of the text, and to correct it would do nothing but induce in error;
  • is what appears as a fault is in fact correct.

Use

In French, sic is usually used at ends of mockery, to underline a weak point in the argumentation of a person or to introduce a reflection Ironique.

It is also frequently used writes shorthand some to indicate that the shorthand writer noted an error but that there transcribed it literally to remain faithful to the remarks made in court.

As foreign word (Latin in fact), one writes it in Italique: sic .
