Shred
The shred is a technique of play to the Guitare which consists in playing a succession of notes very quickly, in the style heavy metal in particular. The amateurs of Speed are given some to heart joy, all is allowed to reach the most number of notes per seconds, with the risk to lose any musical quality, or to make pass a particular emotion. Holding sometimes more technical prowess that from another thing, the shred can suffer from a lack of musical quality and groove. However, the shred is a tool and perhaps more or less well used.
The shredders make use of various ranges and their modes, but also of techniques such as the legato, the tapping, the sweeping and the return ticket. Showing a dexterity except standard, they can carry out really impressive sentences but sometimes the returned effect is not so hard has to realize (the sweeping remains accessible to the majority from people with the return ticket and the tapping).
One can notice the rather frequent use of the vibrato and the harmonics (for example Steve Vai)
The first followers of the shred appeared in the field of the Jazz Fusion with John McLaughlin, Al Di Meola and Allan Holdsworth before extending in the field from the Hard rock with Ritchie Blackmore, Van Halen and in the traditional wave of néo with Yngwie Malmsteen, Tony MacAlpine… This technical capability attracts the admiration of a good number of guitarists. Nevertheless their music is perceived as being a little too technical, still at present, and the majority of the listeners remain a public musicalement advanced.
The guitarists who made of this style their speciality are described as Shredders. Its first large representatives are Steve Vai, Joe Satriani, John Petrucci, Yngwie Malmsteen, Paul Gilbert but also Alexi Laiho, Kirk Hammett and Luca Turilli, Patrick Rondat, Dimebag Darrell, Jason Becker, Michael Romeo, Rusty Cooley, Francesco Fareri, Michael Angelo Batio, Frank Gambale, Synyster Gates, Buckethead, Steve Morse, Al Di Meola, Shawn Lane, Tony MacAlpine… These shredders knew to use speed to give a style particular to their music: néo traditional, jazz…
