The shoveler ( Anas clypeata ) is a bird of the family of the Anatidés.
Description
This Duck of surface, of intermediate size (44-52 cm), is characterized by a nozzle massive, lengthened, flattened and extended to its end (in form a small spatula).At the male the head is green with black reflections, the chest is white, the sides and the belly are chestnut-russet-red and the brown back. The wings on the top are gray bluish with a green mirror and the white under-wing cover with the posterior edge noir.
The female is much duller, with brownish color with clearer tail, it is provided with the same nozzle as the male. The top of the wing is gray with a greenish gray mirror, the lower part is white with a gray posterior edge.
Habitat
He in general attends open water of the Marais, of the Lac S, the ponds, the Estuaire S, the stations of lagunage… One will note a preference for fresh water or slightly brackish.
Reproduction
The couples, formed during the winter, nest in the vegetation near water. The laying takes place in April - May. Incubation from the 8 to 12 hard-boiled eggs 21-22 days. The ducklings Nidifuge S will be raised by the female during 6 weeks.
Food mode
Its nozzle with the singular form enables him to filter water by aspiring it and by rejecting it on the sides. Distribution
The shoveler duck is present on both sides of the Atlantic.European side , it niche in the most septentrional zones and migrates until in subtropical Africa wintering. One will especially observe in France the Canard shoveler duck during wintry time (: 15000 with: 30000 individuals) but it is possible to meet it in summer (700 with: 1300 couples).
Song
The male emits a serious sound ( sok sok sok ) whereas the female emits rare keckkeckkeck .
