Synopsis
Conceived by Pr Crosby Newton and its assistant Benjamin Jahrvi, and intended for fine soldiers, Numéro 5 is nothing more than one machine more sophisticated a little than the others when the lightning falls to him above. From now on endowed with the thought and a solid direction of humor, the robot, completely déboussolé, finds refuge near a pretty ecologist. But already, the army tracks it with an only aim of reducing it to the state spare parts…

Complete summary
Hang:- Something the marvellous one arrived… Number 5 is alive!
- the life is not a faulty operation.
The history is that of one of the five robot-prototypes of the army states-unienne, of a value from approximately 11.000.000 $ (and 17 hundreds…) each one. The scientist in charge of the design of the robots, Pr Newton Crosby (Steve Guttenberg), seems more interested by the peaceful uses of the artificial intelligence, and is in constant conflict with the superiors of the army who do not see there that a weapon extremely effective army of a highly powerful laser beam. The film begins with a fictitious demonstration from the military capacities from the robots. Little time after this introduction, the lightning strikes the generator which reloads the prototype Numéro 5. This causes a “faulty operation” of the system and deteriorates its programming. By accident, Number 5 is found thereafter with the outside of the military center where it was confined, and it seems incompetent to communicate correctly and does not know even where it is.
Number 5 leads finally in the ecologist and friend of the animals Stéphanie Speck (Ally Sheedy). This one first of all thinks of dealing with extraterrestrial in metal combination, before discovering a plate indicating that this visitor was built by the military laboratories of NOVA Robotics , subsidiary of the Robotic Company . It carries out then that the robot has a clean personality and that it became literally “alive” following its blasting. In same time Numéro 5 improves its comprehension of the world and in particular of the dead one: it realizes that it can die and develops a feeling of fear towards its military creators who continue it in order to reduce it in parts, persuaded that the machine became an unverifiable machine and in addition dangerously armed.
After moultes adventures, and an escape éperdue of the army carried out by the paranoiac chief of safety Captain Skroeder (G.W. Bailey), Numéro 5 finds the means of making accept its own destruction. In fact, it builds a double of itself starting from spare parts, which it then sends to the suicide while leaves to him to the Montana with Stéphanie and Newton - which before lost its place at NOVA to have made a pact with Stéphanie and the robot.
Credits of end
A characteristic of film is that the credits of end comprise extracts of cut scenes with the final assembly, thing which preceded at the time the explosion in the Années 2000 of the long versions and other no-claims bonus on DVD. Scenes presented it are without dialogs (only the music of the credits accompanies them, continuously), and include prolongation of sequence of presentation of NOVA (with radio controlled air crafts directed by the robots, idea which will be taken again for second film), a meeting of Number 5 with a robot-toy Omnibot 2000 , like its experiment of a mortally dangerous situation in a scrapyard. These two last scenes come, according to the comments of the realizer, from a sequence originally located between the flight of van NOVA by Numéro 5 (about the middle of film) and its second arrival at the house of Stéphanie; in this sequence the van would have missed gasoline close to the scrapyard, which would have forced the robot to give up it and seek another more suitable means of transport. The Omnibot was to belong to the children of the owner of the cemetery, who would have frightened Number 5 by comparing it with the toy.
Around film
- an edition collector restored with several no-claims bonus left in zone 1 in format DVD, but does not propose any band its or subtitles French. In France (zone 2), the film was only drawn very little, in a quality more than poor (image equivalent to a VHS, it proposed only to the band its Frenchwoman). It is currently largely exhausted and not easily findable.
- Vis-a-vis a certain success in the United States, it is commonly allowed like Film worship of the Années 1980, at the sides of Wargames (1983) of the same realizer.
- the sequence where Numéro 5 dances with Stéphanie is directly inspired by the film the Fever of Saturday evening (1977) of the same realizer.
- the vans painted with the colors of NOVA Robotics are GMC Vandura, mark Chevrolet.
- the scenario of S.S. Wilson and Brent Maddock is inspired by a subject of study relative to E.T extraterrestrial the (1982) which they had written at the University of South Carolina. Thereafter, they wrote other scenarios such as those of Miracle on the 8th street (1987), Short Circuit 2 (1988), Tremors (1990) and Wild Wild West (1999).
- a video game based on this first film also left. Developed by Ocean Software, it contains two distinct parts, one of arcade where Numéro 5 escapes from the laboratories and one of action where Numéro 5 traverses the Oregon while eliminating from the soldiers. This play is declined on the platforms of the time: Amstrad CPC, ZX Spectrum and Commodore 64.
- It should be noted that there exists really a named company NOVA Laboratory Inc. , founded with the Japan one year before the exit of film. The company is specialized in GPS and navigation by satellite…
Rewards
- Nomination at the price of best science fiction film, better realizer and better special effects, at the time of the Academy of science fiction films, fantastic and horror 1987.
