Shizuoka was called formerly Sunpu (駿府) ( Sunpu is the contraction of Suruga No Kokufu because Shizuoka was the capital of the Province of Suruga) and was on the historical line of Tōkaidō, i.e. on the road which connected Kyōto to Edo and which the Daimyō (vassal) were to borrow periodically to go to return allegiance to the Shogun. Ieyasu Tokugawa, first shogun of the Edo time, passed there to its childhood, during the war, hostage of the daimyō Imagawa. When Ieyasu Tokugawa transmitted to his/her son Yoshinobu Tokugawa, the last shogun before the return to the capacity of the Emperor for the era Meiji, it also withdrew him with Sunpu with its abdication.
