Shiromani Akali Dal

The Shiromani Akali Dal (Left religious Akali) or Akali Dal , is an Indian political party . It is a Community party sikh mainly based with the Penjab.

Akali Dal was founded in the years 1920, after the formation of Shiromani Gurudwara Prabandhak Committee, a religious organization created following a movement aiming at protecting the Gurdwârâ (places of worship sikh) from the corrupted priests. Akali Dal is thus regarded as a party politico-monk, and the principal one representing community of Sikhs. The party sikh becomes a force recognized with Master Tara Singh at the end of the years 1920.

Akali Dal militates for the creation of a State mainly populated by sikhs. In 1966, its leader Sant Fateh Singh launches in this direction the countryside Punjabi Suba. After one period of agitation, the Indian State of Penjab, originally founded on the linguistic unit, is divided into two: the Penjab mainly sikh, and the Haryana, more and more hindiphone. This solution remained unsatisfactory for the partisans of the independence of a State sikh, the Kalistan. It followed about it an always latent conflict between extremists sikhs and Indian government, which culminates with the Opération Blue Star and the assassination of Indira Gandhi in 1984. Akali Dal, gains several times the regional elections which place it at the head of Penjab, but its government is on several occasions dislocated by the Indian government, to place the State under federal administration directly ( Presidential' S rule ).

The main adversary of Akali Dal in Penjab is the Parti the Congress. He is combined at the regional and federal level with the Bharatiya Janata Party, and took part in the national coalition with the capacity between 1998 and 2004. Akali Dal gained eight seats of the Lok Sabha, at the time of the general elections of 2004. Amarinder Singh, Chief minister of Penjab since 2002 pennies the label of the party of the Congress, is a defector of Akali Dal.
