Shippagan
Shippagan is a harbor city and Canadian Universitaire located in the area of the acadian Péninsule and the county of Gloucester, in the North-East of the New Brunswick. It is the capital of commercial fishing in New Brunswick.
Geography
Shippagan is located at the end of Presqu'île of Shippagan, in the north of the Plaine. It bordering on Point-Is burned, Haut-Shippagan and Point-Savage. The city has two littorals. That in north is bordered by the harbor of Shippagan, part of the Baie of Shippagan, while that in the south is bordered by the Baie Saint-Simon. There are no river or important lake. The ground is very flat. The south is marshy and counts large a Tourbière, that of the Lac of the Narrow part. The remainder of the territory is partially wooded. Shippagan comes from the Sepagun-scanty intrigue , which means passage of the ducks . This name would be composed of three principal roots: sebaase (to pass), owokun (bearing or passage) and scanty (Duck). The name would refer to the area and not to the precise place. He decides Chipagan , and not Chipagane like wants it the popular belief.
The name of the city had various orthographies. In spite of the fact that Jacques Cartier, Samuel de Champlain and Nicolas Denys explored all the area, none mentioned the name Shippagan. The first appearance of the name was in 1656, when a missionary capuchin of name of Ignace of Paris proposed in a letter with his superiors to establish stations of missionaries into four or five places of Acadie, of which Miscou and Shippagan. He wrote in the Latin name in , Cibaguensi .
At the 18th century, the most current form of the name was Chipagan and some alternatives. Certain english-speaking used the French orthography, but that English was essential starting from the beginning of the 19th century, with some alternatives, of which Shipagan , Ship-have-gang , Shipegan , Shippegan , Shippigan and Shippagan . It should be noted that a village of the 18th century located on the site of current the Bas-Caraquet was called Chipagan .
Demography
