Luis Buñuel (February 22nd 1900 with Calanda, Aragon, Spain - July 29th 1983 with Mexico City, Mexico) is a Réalisateur and Scénariste of Cinéma born in Spain and which took Mexican nationality .

He is the father of Juan Luis Buñuel.

Biography

Childhood

Luis Buñuel was born in 1900 with Calanda (Aragon), in a small town considered for its " Obscurantism " monk.

He comes in the world in an large family but rich and consequently he will follow an education Jesuit. All its work was marked by this constraint.

Youth

At 17 years, it leaves to Madrid to begin higher learning, it meets Salvador Dali and Federico Garcia Lorca, gives its support for the movement dadaïste.

In 1925, it comes to Paris. It is able to be made engage as assistant realizer of Jean Epstein, on turning, in 1926, of “Mauprat”, then, in 1928, of “the Fall of the house Usher”.

The Surrealism

In 1928, with the material aid of his/her mother, Luis Buñuel its first film a dog Andalou makes whose scenario is written in collaboration with El Salvador Dalí. The United States

Between 1933 and 1935, Buñuel works for American companies. The civil war which bursts in Spain upsets it. It takes part in a documentary pro-republican “Madrid 36”, then it goes to the the United States. He works to show the effectiveness and the danger of propaganda films Nazis (he uses in particular a film of Leni Riefenstahl).

But it does not hide its Anticatholicisme and its Marxisme and sudden of the pressures. Finally Buñuel is constrained to be exiled in Mexico.

Mexico

In 1947, it is in Mexico and takes again its career of realizer then. “Los Olvidados” presented to the Cannes festival, is a remarkable work. “El” and “Archibald of Cruz”, its best Mexican films are full with reference to Sade, the religion, the middle-class. “Nazarin” marks the apogee of its Mexican period.

Return in Europe

Buñuel is seen proposing a turning in Europe, it acts of “Viridiana”, which obtains the gold palm to the Cannes festival but especially causes large political movements, diplomatic and religious. The mode of Free, after having allowed turning and accepted that the film represents Spain with the Festival ends up prohibiting it completely. The Spanish copies are seized and destroyed but the film is distributed normally in France. The film is distributed in Spain in 1977, two years after the death of the Caudillo .

It receives the Oscar of the best foreign film for “the discrete Charm of the middle-class” and chooses to stop its career of realizer in 1976 with “This obscure object of the desire”.
