Shimaore

The shimaore (or mahorais ) is one of the two principal indigenous languages spoken on the island about Mayotte. It is a Comorian dialect , whereas the Shibushi is close to the spoken languages with Madagascar. So historically the shimaore - as the shibushi - was the rural language of Mayotte, it becomes de facto the indigenous Lingua franca for a use with the daily newspaper, in particular because of the increase in the population speaking the shimaore. The shimaore is present in the new televised programs of RFO. The census of 2002 raised 80  140 individuals speaking the shimaore on the island about Mayotte.

The shimaore is clearly today under the influence of the French. Indeed, in addition to certain speakers of Mayotte speak French, this one is the language of education, the knowledge and employment. For this reason of the religious organizations try to reanimate the flame and to give again with the shimaore its noble letters, such association SHIME.

Mutual comprehension between the Anjouanais and the Mahorais is almost total; only some minor phonetic differences, and some lexical characteristics distinguish them.
