Shigeru Round of applause (Japanese: 茂坂 ) is a architect Japan board.

Biography

Shigeru Ban was born with Tōkyō in 1957. It founds its cabinet in 1985.

It is to advise for the Office of the High Commission of UNO for the refugees.

Its style

It is made known by its very light architecture, like this paper Church of Kōbe, realized in a few months after the seism, as well as provisional houses in the devastated zone. It uses recycled and hollow compressed paper tubes.

Who is it?

" If the tubes of paperboard became the element by which I' one identifies today usually the architecture of Shigeru Ban, this one is however not reducible with the use of a material, whatever it is, including in the case of architecture urgently conceived to come to assistance of the victims of the earthquake of Kōbe and the refugees from Rwanda. The material is here the revealing one of an approach which seeks to again register the architectural act in the topicality. The emergency shelters of Shigeru Ban make operational the current speeches on the conditions to which architecture would be subjected. These projects show indeed that today any local event which touches the human environment finds its solution only by one treatment a total level, which it acts of the way of financing calling upon international assistances, coordination ensured by Office of the High Commission the refugees of UNO for Rwanda, of technical collaboration with specialists in various countries, voluntariate of the inhabitants of Kobe. By the mobilization and the implication of so different speakers, these projects are a proposal for submission to the company and for a its operating process. If one considers the project for Kobe compared to the situation at the time of the catastrophe, one cannot miss distinguishing a critical approach there from the system of production of architecture. Vis-a-vis the ruins of the broken down structures of reinforced concrete, Shigeru Ban proposes the use of the paperboard to realize at little cost and in full safety dwellings and a church. Beyond the obvious control of the technical possibilities of a material apparently not very favourable with a structural employment, the project then results in revaluing certain certainty. The paste with paperboard without form (but already present in Japanese traditional architecture via the shoji), contrary to the unusable and irremediable debris cluster, gives rise to an architecture optimized on the technique plans and economic, and released from its old with-prioris. The catastrophe is the occasion to exceed the existing limits. The process of recycling takes share to architecture to fight against the entropy while playing with the transitory statute of the produced object. While conceiving, on the request of the inhabitants, a church then by proposing family home which makes it possible to recreate a community, Shigeru Ban Formula One a new origin for architecture and imposes a reflection which exceeds the concepts of context, program and means by registering the architectural act differently, by a current conscience of its stakes. The design of the shelters for Kobe and Rwanda goes thus well beyond the circumstantial answer to the dramatic consequences of a natural disaster or of a civil war, she questions the totality of the process of the architectural design like her action in the company. She is as much the search for an esthetics as of an ethics architecturale."

Shigeru Round of applause, post-postmodernist

" If we define Shigeru Ban like a young architect who, in the tradition of the formalism of New York, succeeded in carrying out the " Nine House" Public garden; of John Hedjuk, his professor with Cooper Union, better even as its mentor, we would miss something. If we define Shigeru Ban as who transforms the tubes of paperboard recycled into structural materials for architecture, changing this fact the assumption according to which the paperboard is fragile and flexible, it we would miss an inventive environmentalist something. If we define Shigeru Ban as a social activist who develops portable light shelters and works with volunteers to deliver them to refugees in Africa and to the victims of the earthquake of Kōbe, we would miss something. There is no doubt that Shigeru Ban is at the same time a formal originator, a creator of new materials and a social activist. But we will be interested here in anything else. In all these categories, Ban had predecessors who signed their work, patented it and used it to promote their own reputations. What distinguishes Ban of its predecessors is his capacity to adopt behaviors and methods which with the first access seem to represent various categories, and to reduce them to most extreme clearness, as a talented poet which formats his texts, to make scintillating jewels of them. The work of Round of applause is not the minimalism of the expression. The expression itself is minimale."
