The shield-graft is used techniques of Clerc's Office. She is particularly advised for the Fruit S with cores because the bark of their tree is often more fragile.

Preparation

The tree on which one takes the escutcheon and the tree being used as Porte-greffe must all two be sprinkled well in the days preceding the Clerc's Office in order to be well “in Sève” so that the barks can be detached easily.

The graft

It must be taken on the variety selected and constituted of a bud (eye) of the year well developed and surrounded by a edge of bark in form of escutcheon (flat in top and pointed in bottom). To handle the graft by the petiole to avoid touching with the fingers the part with sharp of the graft (Cambium), which would cause an infection which would ruin the Clerc's Office. To be well placed, the bud must be at least 2 cm under the transverse notch and must point well upwards.

Procedure

The shield-graft consists in making a notch in form of T on the Porte-greffe then insert a Greffon there.

Once the eye inserted in the notch, the upper part of the escutcheon must butt precisely against the bar of T of the opening so that the sap can circulate between the two elements. Then, one Binding (while starting with the top) with a ribbon with Clerc's Office or Raffia while just letting exceed the eye and its Petiole.

The “welding” occurs in both to three weeks following the operation and the fall of the petiole at this time there is a sign of success.

At the beginning of spring following the operation, one can cut the understock right to the top of the point of Clerc's Office so that all the sap available is allocated with the graft.

Possible periods for this Clerc's Office

This type of Clerc's Office can be made at two periods of the year:
  • at the beginning of spring, one says whereas it is a Clerc's Office “in pushing eye” because the branch develops immediately.
  • at the end of the summer, it is a Clerc's Office “in eye sleeping” because the branch will develop only at next spring.
