Sheldon Whitehouse (born the October 20th 1955 with Providence, Rhode Island), is a lawyer and a American Politician , member of the Democratic party and senator of Rhode Island since January 2007.

Studies and family

Sheldon Whitehouse is wire and grandson of diplomat. It is graduate of Saint-Paul, the Université of Yale (1978) and the university in Droit of Virginia (1982).

He is married, lives with Providence with his wife, Sandra Thornton Whitehouse, a marine biologist. The couple has two children.

Professional path

Whitehouse began its professional path in 1982 as legal assistant of judge Richard F. Neely at the Virginia-Western Court of Appeal of .

He worked starting from 1985 for the offices of the Attorney General of Rhode Island.

In 1991, it joined the team of the governor Bruce Sundlun. He becomes a specialist in the fight against corruption.

In 1992, Sundlun names it at the position of director of the financial businesses.

In 1994, the president Bill Clinton names it as federal attorney of Rhode Island, station which it leaves in 1998, year when it is elected Attorney General of Rhode Island. It then continues to denounce and continue any form of active corruption or passive.

Political career

In 2002, it tries to be presented to the elections of the governor but it is beaten as of the democratic primary educations by the senator of the state, Myrth York.

In 2006, he is candidate with the Senate of the United States against the republican senator outgoing, Lincoln Chafee, a centrist often opposed to the policy of the president George W. Bush.

Against any waiting, Whitehouse is elected the November 7th 2006, with 53% of the voices compared with 47% with Lincoln Chafee. It then gives to the democrats a seat which had been for a long time held by Republican senators.
