Sheila , of its true name Anny Chancel , is a French singer , born on August 16th, 1945 with Creteil. She is resulting from a modest milieu: his/her parents held a travelling confectionery, on the markets of the Parisian southern suburbs. It became one of the French singers most popular of the second part of the 20th century, and was its greater successes in the years 1960 and 1970. Always presents today, it sold more than 25 million discs throughout its career in FRANCE, and 80 million in the world. and recorded and sang in 5 different languages (French, English, German, Spanish, Italian). For the record sales it appears in the 4th rank in France and N°1 singer.
In 1962, it is on the councils of Henri Leproux, director of the Golf-Drouot, that its future producer, Claude Carrère, auditions it in an unused cinema of the 14th district of Paris with his group of musicians: " Guitars Brothers".
Sheila , its first 45 turns in solo, leaves on November 13rd 1962 and its producer decides that Anny Chancel will take as pseudonym: Sheila the name of the title headlight of this disc. Its career is launched…
She is its first great success with " The school is finie" in 1963. This disc will be sold with nearly 700.000 specimens, and is N°1 of the sales of spring! After the exit of its 1st 33 turns made up of 13 songs, it starts its first round of October 1963 to the beginning of the year 1964 in the French main cities. Meanwhile, it receives the National Grand Prix of the Disc " Francis Carco" academy of the French disc, on November 22nd, 1963.
Thanks to its many passages out of radio and on television, it will obtain an important list throughout the Sixties of tubes: " First surprised partie" and " The whistle of the copains" in 1963, " Listen to this disque" and " You them copains" in 1964, " It is you whom I aime" and " The Américain" folklore; in 1965, " The cinema… I saw myself in Hawaï" , " Bang bang" and " The hour of the sortie" in 1966, " The famille" , " Adios amor" , and " The kilt" in 1967, " French moyen" little girl; in 1968, and " Uncle Jo" in 1969.
She turns in 1966 in film of Serge Piolet: Bang-Bang with Jean Richard and Guy Lux.
The success of Sheila is such as its producer will launch the Shops of clothing Sheila, the beauty products Sheila (Sheiladermine), a headstock with the effigy of the star will be marketed in the Sixties like later at the time Disco. The key will be also marketed that Sheila carried around the neck in the Seventies and whose copies will be put on sale in the vending machines! All that confirms its statute of Superstar of the years 60-70.
In 1970, success continues with " Return I you aime" , then in 1971, it knows one of its greater triumphs with its disc: " the Kings Mages " , N°1 of the summer with 900.000 sales, followed by the exit of an album, " Coils " , container of many new songs. Throughout the Seventies, it will continue to connect the tubes: " Samson and Dalila" , " The husband of mama" and " Headstock of porcelaine" 1972, " Adam and Eve " and " Melancholy " (begun again into Brazilian, and which will be N°1 in Brazil) in 1973, " the couple " , " You are the soleil" and " do not make pitch the boat " 1974, or, " It is the heart " , French version of the " Doctor' S Orders " of Douglas Carol " Doctor orders" (it is perhaps there, in 1975, the first song disco music in French…), " To like before dying " and " Which temperament of feu" 1975, " a prince in exile " and " Patrick my darling " 1976, " The arch of Noé" 1977, etc
At that time, its private life also evolves/moves: one will note with recreation that it Marie on February 13rd 1973, with the singer Ringo, in Paris, in the 13th district, with 13:13! At once married, it will record with her new husband the mythical duet: " Gondoles with Venise" . She will be mom of a little boy, fore-mentioned " Ludovic" , in April 1975.
With the general surprise, in June 1977, in full wave Disco music, it proposes its first English title: " Coil to me baby" . It is an undeniable artistic turn: it is discovered equipped with shorts with spangles, accompanied by a group of three black dancers (B. Devotion), dancing on a rate/rhythm adapted for the tracks of the discotheques. The song is exported in the whole world, and the " French moyen" little girl; becomes an international artist… This title will very quickly make it know, initially in Germany, Spain and in Italy, then in all Europe.
Encouraged by its successes, it decides to adapt (always in disco music) the American standard: " Singin' in the rain" . It is classified everywhere in the world: from South Africa in Sweden, while passing by Italy, Brazil, Japan, Argentina, Denmark, Spain, Australia, Germany (6th sale of the year), Netherlands (3rd) or England (9th), where it will off take part in the emission worship Top the Pops. More than 5 million specimens of the 45 turns of this song will be sold. The triumph is total!
Whereas Sheila continues its promotion through Europe with the 45 turns and 1st English " album; Singin' in the rain" , it records " Hotel of the plage" , trailer of film of the same name, which leaves in January 1978. Then the titles " come; You Light My Fire" which is classified in the best sales, in Italy, Germany and Ireland. But the singer does not forget the French public, with her 45 turns " Kennedy Airport" , which will be him also an enormous success. It is as at this period, as the mark of Delavennat toys markets a headstock with its effigy. The headstocks are rivals of Barbie - the famous headstock mannequin - and are easily recognizable with the small flower which they raise to the temple… They exist into fair or châtain; with the blue eyes or chestnut.
In 1979, Sheila takes again the English songs with " Seven lonely days" , with arrangements very disco music, in the style " Knock one wood" of Amïï Stewart, and makes a reasonable score with 250.000 sales. At the end of the year, the group Chic composes an album to him: " King off the world" . " Spacer" , first extract of this disc, quickly becomes a tube of world scale. The album leaves in more than 50 countries. It will be classified again a little everywhere: from Australia in the USA, while passing by Finland, Germany, Sweden, Spain, Brazil, etc a number impressing of versions of this song exist in adaptation everywhere in the world. This song will be also the credits of variety programme in Italy, where " Spacer" will remain 26 weeks in the first 10 places of the hit-parades. It is for the song " Spacer" that Sheila will make its first clip, in London.
In 1980, Sheila continues with a new French " album; Pilot on the ondes" , with titles like " Love with the téléphone" and " White tops of Wolfgang". This 33 turns is gold disc. The following year 1981, it makes a return to the popular song " And pas" does not bring back it; of Joe Dolce " With shaddap you face" , which becomes quickly, one of successes of the summer. At the end of the year, the singer leaves another English album (this time in a style rather rock'n'roll), with like principal title " Little darlin' " . Produced by Keith Olsen, the producer of Stalemate Benatar, that will be its greater success in the USA. Sheila will become thus the first French singer classified in the United States since Edith Piaf. For the promotion of the disc, two video clips will be produced besides for two songs of this album.
In 1982 Sheila will return definitively to the French song, in particular with " Glori gloria" of Umberto Tozzi, but in French, who will be his last great success at Carrère. In 1983, the album One says mark a new turning in its career. The objective of the artist is now the scene and to have a new repertory made up of French songs, written (words and musics) especially for it! With the assistance of Yves Martin, which will become his/her companion thereafter, it will create two new songs " The écuyère" and " Take along to me " in a show TV signed Maritie and Gilbert Carpentier in March 1984. Then a new album I am as you will be recorded in the best studios in the Bahamas!
In 1985 (starting from February 22nd), it chooses the room of the Zenith in Paris to make there its return to the stage and succeeded a marvelously spectacle. Criticisms are unanimous, its scenic qualities are undeniable. Unfortunately, on the level of the reservations the spectacle does not meet discounted success… it should be said that 5 weeks were envisaged ..... (February 22nd at March 24th, 1985). It would have been necessary, Olympia, where it would have filled during 3 weeks. At the time of the summer of this year, it turns in a film of Cinéma of author: the Island with the treasure of Raoul Ruiz with Martin Pram and Jean-Pierre Léaud.
1987: Sheila leaves " Like aujourd'hui" , which is classified with signal 50, then the following year in 1988, a new album: Tendencies . One finds Sheila on the scene of the Olympia in October 1989. The hirings are torn off! Sheila summarizes the whole of its career there by interpreting its larger tubes: Sheila , the school is finished , Gloria , Spacer… However, at the end of the spectacle, it announces its will to put a term at its career of singer. Its public, torn, has evil to realize that it has just attended perhaps its last spectacle!
She devotes herself then to the writing of books: Ways of light (1993), And if it were true (1995), the Prisoner (1997)…
In 1992, Sheila will be also the guest of a " Music Stars" special with Michel Drucker which will be seen by nearly 10 million people (however programmed in 2nd part of evening). It is the Record TV rating of the year! A new title appears " One says more rien" at the time of the exit of a box 4 CD gathering its more beautiful songs.
It also presents television programs: " Blow of cœur" in 1990 on France 2 where it will accommodate inter alia John Travolta and " SLC" in 1996 on TF1 with Dave.
Always for the small screen, Sheila turns in 1994 in an episode of the series Van Loc to the side of Georges Guyen Van Loc. It carries out sculptures (sale with Drouot, exposure to Paris). Noble-hearted woman, it engages in the fight against the AIDS, starting from 1995 in association ELCS at the sides of Jean-Luc Roméro.
She will be made knight of the Légion of honor in 1998.
Fortunately at the end of the Nineties, Sheila will find its public as singer with the exit of the the Best CD of Sheila (1998), in the menu appear of new interpretations of " Spacer" , " Glori Gloria" , " The kings mages" … but also 3 new titles " Closed to you" , " Just like ça" , " Vagueness with the âme" , which will be gold disc. After the launching of the disc in a famous Parisian discotheque and new televisions, she will again triumph with Olympia. Consequently, it will continue its usual journey in particular with the album " Dense" exit in 1999 with the individual one of the same title. An album with sonorities dance and electro. A little less present on the plates TV, it will continue nevertheless to sing and to occur on scene and this, for the very many pleasure of a public always.
To also note that in 2001 the book appears: 40 years of tubes (1960-2000), it is about a book written jointly by Fabrice Ferment and the SNEP on the best sales of 45 turns in France. Sheila appears there in 2nd position with 36 tubes right behind Johnny Hallyday (40 tubes), but in front of Sardou and far in front of Claude François (21 tubes). It is without question the French singer who sold the most discs.
End 2001, it records for television, an acoustic concert which will be diffused a few weeks later on Canal Jimmy.
Sheila celebrates its 40 years of career in 2002, always with the Olympia, in front of a conquered public. The video of this spectacle leaves in DVD in 2003 will be certified out of GOLD, just like CD, as well as a book carried out in collaboration with Didier Varrod.
The year 2006 sees the republication of CD albums (in particular Love them Magi, Tendances, love which burns in me , etc), of DVD (the concert in Olympia in 1989), of its first Long Box (3 CD), as well as its integral studio (18 CD!!) including its new title: love for only prayer . To finish the year it was again on a scene with Paris, with the Uncontrollable cabinet for 9 representations from December 19th to 28th.
In 2007 Sheila gives a big number of concerts in France and Belgium. It is the high-speed motorboat of the Gold Round during the summer, and is again with the Olympia for a single official reception on Friday, September 21, 2007. At the end of this representation she announced her return on this scene of Olympia on March 4th 2008.
To note that his/her son Ludovic Chancel (1975-) published in 2005 the book Fils of… .
Sheila appears in the 4th rank of the largest salesmen of discs in France. It is the N°1 singer in front of Celine Dion http://www.infodisc.fr/Artiste_Ventes.php
