Shattiwazza

Shattiwazza (old Mattiwazza reading) is a sovereign of the Mitanni.

Wire of the king Tushratta, Shattiwazza was forced to flee the court mitanienne when his/her father is done assassinated by another of his sons. In the disturbed time which followed, the Assyrie NS, under the aegis of Assur-uballit Ier were émancipèrent of the influence of Mitanni, the Alshéens invaded the country and the applicant Artatama/Artatama II gained the ascending one, followed by his son Shuttarna. Suppiluliuma Ier the king of the Hittites affirmed " that the worldwide of Mitanni fell in ruin, and that Assyrie and the country of Alshe divided its territoire" . It would seem nevertheless which that corresponds more to a dream that with reality. This Shuttarna kept good relationships with Assyrie and returned the doors of the palate of Assur which had been taken by Shaushtatar. Such spoils were a very great political symbol in Mésopotamie.

Fugitive Shattiwazza would initially have been sought refuge in Babylon, then would have gone to the court of the king hittite who would have married it with one of his daughters. The treaty between Suppiluliuma of Hatti and Shattiwazza of Mitanni reached us and is one of the primary sources of information over this time. After the concluding of this treaty, Piyashshili, a son of Suppiluliuma, carried out an army hittite in country mitannien. According to hittites sources, Piyashshili and Shattiwazza crossed Euphrate to Karkemish and went then against Irridu in territory hourrite. They sent messages since western bank of Euphrate and it would seem that they had awaited a friendly reception. It of it was nothing because the people, influenced by the richnesses of Tushratta as Suppiluliuma claimed it, remained honest with his new leader: " Pourquoi do you come? If you come to beat you, come, but it could be well that you never turn over to the country of the Large King ". Shuttarna sent men for reinforce the troops and of the tanks of the district of Irridu, but the army hittite gained the victory and the people of Irridu asked for peace.

In same time, an Assyrian army " carried out by only one driver of tank " went on Washshukanni. It seems that Shuttarna had required the Assyrian assistance in front of the threat hittite. Either the troops were not with the height of waitings, or Shuttarna changed opinion because the Assyrian army vut to refuse the entry in Washshukanni. It thus made the seat of the city. This event led to the fall of popularity of Shuttarna: perhaps that the inhabitants preferred to depend on the empire hittite that their old subjects. A messenger was sent to Piyashshili and Shattiwaza with Irridu and delivered his message publicly, with the doors of the city. Piyashshili and Shattiwaza went on Washshukanni and the towns of Harran and Pakarripa on the course went.

While they were in Pakarripa, in the middle of a sorry country where their troops suffered from the hunger, they had wind of the Assyrian projection, but the enemy never showed himself. The allies continued the Assyrian troops in their retirement towards Nilap-ini, but did not manage to oblige them with confrontation. The assyiriens would be turned over in their country because of the superiority of the forces hittites involved.

Shattiwaza became king of Mitanni, but after Suppiliuma taken Karkemish and the areas in the west of Euphrate which were controlled by his/her Piyashshili son, Mitanni was limited to the valleys of the Khabur and of the Balikh and was increasingly dependant on its allies in Hatti. Certain experts speak about a state marionette hittite, which was used to make plug against Assyrie.

Assyrie, then under Assur-uballit I, also started to seek to extend to the detriment from Mitanni. Its vassal state of Nuzi, in the east of the Tiger, was conquered and destroyed.
