In 1912, Tokuji Hayakawa founds a metallurgy workshop to Tōkyō and invents in 1915 the first mechanical Portemine, named Ever-Sharp Pencil (the pencil cut always well) which gave its company name to the company. With the wire of time, the company diversified its activities in three sectors:

  • consumer electronics (audio-visual, telephony, electric household appliances);
  • electronic professional (telefax, calculation, systems of impression, systems of cashing);
  • component (electronic, integrated circuits, postings with liquid crystals, solar).

With close to 50  000 paid approximately the half are out of Japan, distributed in twenty-nine country, Sharp Corporation realized in 2003 a consolidated turnover of 16,833 billion dollars.

Sharp has sponsored the English club of Manchester United of 1982 to 2000.
