A shareholder activist is a shareholder who uses the share of the capital that it holds in a company to influence the Management of the company. He will seek to make sure that the goals of the leaders coincide with his and will be able to thus try to direct the line of business in varied directions; they can be financial (changes of structures of Financement, cost reductions, payments of higher dividends, etc) or non-financial (investment withdrawal of certain nondemocratic countries, durable adoption of development policies, etc).
In comparison with a Public offering of purchase, a policy activist is all the more definitely cheaper since with 10% of the voices it is possible to weigh on the business management, when the floating is high.
The shareholders activists can act by various means: advertizing campaigns, adoption of resolutions as a general meeting, negotiations direct with management.
Among the funds of known American investments for their policy activist one can quote Icahn Management LP, Santa Monica Partners Opportunity Fund LP and Relational Investors, LLC.
