The Shans are a Ethnicity of Burma.

The word " shan" wants to say " montagne" in Chinese and the Chinese call this ethnos group, " Tai Shan" or " Dai Shan".

The language shan belongs to the sub-group tai of the branch known as " kam-tai" Languages tai-kadai. This sub-group belong also in particular the zhuang of south of the China, the lao with the Laos, the Thai in Thailand and the languages Tày of the mountainous regions of the north of the Vietnam.

The language nearest to the shan is the Lu south of the China.
