History

The word “shampoo” English date of 1762, where it had the direction “to mass”. The word was borrowed from the anglo-Indian “shampoo”, which came in its turn from the Hindi chāmpo (चाँपो /t ʃãːpoː/), the requirement of chāmpnā (चाँपना /t ʃãːpnaː/), “to oil, mass the muscles”, and which was derived itself from the word Sanskrit/Hindi chāmpnā (चाँपना /t ʃãːpnaː/), indicating the flowers of the plant Michelia champaca (family of the Magnoliaceae) traditionally used to make odorous oils for hair.

The term and the service were presented by certain Sake Dean Mahomed, which opened with Brighton in 1759 a Bain shampooinant under the name of Indian Steam baths of Mahomed. Its baths resembled Turkish baths where the customers received an Indian treatment of champi, i.e. of shampoo, or massages therapeutic. Its service was appreciated; it accepted this high distinction to be made Chirurgien Shampooineur of George IV like Guillaume IV.

In the first times of the shampoo, the English hairdressers made Bouillir of the spangles of Savon in water with plants in order to give gloss and fragrance to the hair. Kasey Hebert was the first known producer of shampoo and it is with him that the origin is currently allotted. It sold its first shampoo, “Shaempoo” in the streets of London, its birthplace.

In the beginning, the first shampoos were containing black Savon and of Washing soda; both contain the surface-active ones, a kind of cleaning product. The modern shampoo, that we know today, was initially proposed during the years 1930 with Drene, the first shampoo synthetic (and not-soapy).

Since old times so far, the Indians used various formulas of shampoos while making use of plants like the neem, the Acacia Concinna or nut of washing, the Henné, the Bael, the Bacopa monnier, the Fenugrec, the Babeurre, the Amla, the Aloès and the Amande in combination with some aromatic components like the Santal, the Jasmin, the Curcuma, the Rose and the Musc

Composition

A shampoo contains washing agents (or Détergent S) which can be: ammonium lauryl sulfate, ammonium laureth sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate or sodium lauryl sulfate (this last being most aggressive). Thanks to these washing agents, the shampoo dissolves the grease which is involved in water with dirtinesses that it contains.

It contains foaming agents, which are also Tensioactif S. Plus the shampoo foams, more it is scouring.

A shampoo contains also various additives according to the required effect:

  • of the antiliming agents
  • of the stabilizers of pH to acidify the shampoo
  • preserving S
  • of the dye S
  • of the Perfume S
  • of the agents surgraissants (Oil S) to limit the aggression of the shampoo
  • hydrating agents as the Honey
  • of the essential oils extracted from plants
  • of the disentangling agents which make it possible the shampoos “two in one” to also be used as conditioners.

Use

The shampoo applies while massing to the wet hair. One masses the scalp without rubbing the hair too much. It is useless to let pose the shampoo. It is necessary to rinse abundantly to avoid preserving residues of shampoo in the hair. A shampoo must be applied about three times per week because the shampoo in abundance damages the hair because it removes the protective film of the hair and grease.

For the pets a specific shampoo is necessary to avoid irritation, plates red, etc. Indeed the skin of the dogs and cats has a pH different from the human skin.
