Shadbush

The shadbush ( Shadbush , to pronounce " amélanKier") is a kind of Arbuste S or trees rustic originating in North America composed of 26 species (see remark on their taxonomy below) and pertaining to the family of the Rosacée S, subfamily of the Malacées.

The high shadbushes from 3 to 10 m thrive mainly on acid grounds. Their Feuille S null and void green takes beautiful colors coppers and crimson in autumn.

The shadbushes have Fleur S spangled generally white, in final bunches, more or less pink according to the varieties giving of the bay S edible reds or black called " amélanches" (or Saskatoon in language shouts, from where the other expression indicating them, bays of Saskatoon ).

The Fruit S of Amelanchier alnifolia are larger (diameter 8 to 10 mm) and tastier than those of the other varieties. In Quebec, they are generally better known under the name of wild pears .

The taxonomy of the shadbushes is rather confused. According to the sources, some let us tax are regarded as species, under species, varieties or even synonyms. Moreover the difficulty of differentiation of the species is complicated by the fact that they hybrident between them naturally, and reproduce sometimes by Polyploïdie (multiplication of the copies of the chromosomes) or by apoximy (viable seeds, without fecundation).

Etymology

The name “Shadbush” is derived from the Provençal or the Savoyard amélancier which indicates the indigenous species (Amelanchier ovalis) which was also called wild Néflier.
