History

The old name of the village

Before telling the history of the Tower of Crieu, it is advisable to announce that the current name of the village was given by decree on October 15th, 1915 (thus under Raymond Poincaré), after deliberation of the municipal council of August 16th, 1914. Naming before " Allemans" , one will easily include/understand this change at the time of the First World War. Several assumptions were formulated on the origin of this name:
  • Although no text seems to justify this version, one tells that Simon IV of Montfort, at the time of the Albigensian Crusade, counted in its troops of the German Mercenaire S. Those, about 1209, came to settle close to the Crieu and founded there a community called " Alamani".
  • One has another explanation, lack it also of confirmation written: it would be about tradesman German who had been established not far from Pamiers in order to make the trade of iron.

One will note that the Tower of Crieu was also called “Saint Paul of Crieu”, Saint-Paul being patron saint of the village.

A foundation related to the Saint-Antonin abbey of Pamiers

The first mention of the village of Allemans is made in the list of the possessions of the abbey of Saint-Antonin of Pamiers, in 1249 (under the pope Gregoire IX). The mention of Allemans not being made in the same type of list in 1215 (under Innocent III), one can easily date the official foundation from the village between these two dates.

In 1295, Pamiers is set up in évêché. Allemans becomes property of the abbey Saint-Antonin then (just like Villeneuve-of-Paréage the and Saint-Tinder). After the head office of Pamiers (in the neighborhoods of 1250), a strong Castle is set up, taking the name of episcopal palate.

A disputed possession

Allemans and the territories neighborhood are the subject of disputes during nearly four centuries (of the creation of the Paréage of Allemans in 1308 until the establishment of the Cadastre by Napoleon i).
  • on June 29th, 1308 is concluded a Paréage between the king Philippe IV and Bernard Saisset, then bishop of Pamiers. This paréage, called " pariage of Allemans" (" Alamanis" in the Latin text) form a royal viguery which includes/understands a good quantity of villages neighborhood. Thus the castle and the village are in Languedoc and depend on the seneschalsy of Carcassonne (dependence still attested in 1443). One bench the seat of justice in the village of Allemans.
  • the wood of Boulbonne which surrounds Allemans are in joint ownership between the count de Foix, the city and the bishop of Pamiers, the abbots of Saint-Antonin and Boulbonne. One will note the presence of the forests and the arable lands of Boulbonne in the Livre burrow of 1776.

One will be able to add that the commune of the Tower of Crieu belonged to the district of Pamiers in 1801, then passes to that of Foix in 1926, finally in that of Pamiers in 1942.

Enquiry

The most outstanding fact of the history of Allemans is the presence in its walls of the court of Inquisition against the heretics cathares. One will note between 1318 and 1325 at least 34 interventions of this court in the prison of the episcopal castle of Jacques Fournier (future Benoît XII), then bishop of Pamiers and Seigneur of Allemans of 1317 to 1326. Some names arrived to us: Pèire Maury, shepherd of Montaillou and heretic, were imprisoned there; Pierre Clerk of Montaillou, Armand Tiseyre of Lordat, Jean Castlings of the Salvetat, Pierre of Tignac… died in this prison.

Today still some street names point out this past like the " street of the inquisition" or the " street of the bucher" …

Wars of religion

As in Pamiers, Allemans was the place of confrontation at the time of the wars of religion. Thus, in 1621, the judge of Allemans (a Huguenot named Lacvivier) made burn the church of the village after having made there give 15 or 16 cannonades.

A place of resistance

During the Second world war, the field of the castle of Bonrepaux (which had belonged to the abbey of Boulbonne) was used of masks and boxes with letters for the Résistance.

Places and monuments

  • Church dedicated at Saint Paul: rebuilt after the XVIIe
  • Masonry named " Château" 17th century altered with XIXe (with the creation of a park). It would have been the residence of the viguiers
  • Chapelle: built between 1854 and 1864, it was restored in 1958.
