Sganarelle is a recurring name in the work of Molière, which indicates several types of character:

  • Sganarelle or the imaginary Cuckold (1660), the part which gained the most success of living of Molière, is a middle-class man of Paris which, trusting appearances, believes that his wife misleads it
  • In Dom Juan or the stone Feast (1665), Sganarelle is the servant of Dom Juan. The character will give to Leporello in the Don Giovanni of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart
  • In the Doctor in spite of him (1666), Sganarelle is a qualified doctor of drunkard and the lazy one by his Martine wife.

Often it is Molière itself which played the part of Sganarelle. It still utilized this character in the Doctor stealing , the Forced marriage , the School of the husbands and the Love doctor .

Auguste Count was described as Sganarelle by his/her comrades of promotion during its studies in 1814-1816, because on its sides buffoons.
