It is surrounded by the mountains on three sides and one finds many water falls of this fact to the surroundings. It is connected to the Faroe Islands by a ferry.

The village was centered on tourism although it still has an important port. Seyðisfjörður shelters several museums.

The first human installations in the zone of the village go back to 1848. The village was rested by Norwegian fishermen. Seyðisfjörður was a base for the American forces and British during the Second world war.
