The Fétichisme more generally indicates the worship of supposed fetishes objects being equipped with a capacity. It is with the turning of XIXe and XXe centuries that the term undergoes a semantic evolution. The “fetishistic” substantive becomes the follower no longer of a religion but of a perversion.

It is Alfred Binet which is the first to use the term in a sexological direction in a artile of the philosophical Revue in 1887. Its theory appuye on remarks of Jean-Martin Charcot and Valentine Magnan on a case of fetishist of the Night-cap whose first sexual agitations were related to the vision of his/her mother out of night-cap at the 5 years age. This theory determines the infantile experiment like fixing of fetishism. Theory summarized by this sentence of Binet: One always returns to his first loves . Then, Sigmund Freud proposes an explanation as for the origin of the sexual fetishism, which would be related to a traumatism during childhood symbolized by the anguish of castration. According to his theory, a boy discovering for the first time that a person of the female sex (her mother for example) does not have a penis, makes a transfer on an inanimate object which he will see at the same time.
