Sexual Abstinence
The sexual abstinence or Continence is nonthe use of the genitals for a sexual activity, the most usual significance being within the framework of a relation with another individual, but includes the masturbation.
Not to confuse with the Chasteté which is the fact of ordering its sexuality in its state of life so that it is the expression of a gift (a priest or a nonmarried person will be pure if he saw the continence, a husband will be pure in relations with his wife if he tends to offer happiness to him).
The continence is advised or imposed in a religious, medical framework or of property or by combining these factors.
In company
Formerly and in certain traditional cultures, the minors (especially women) are supposed to abstain from a Coït before the Mariage. During the marriage, the two husbands must have sexual relationships only between them (exclusiveness). In Occident, the Virginité famous characters is regarded as important, for example Jeanne d' Arc, is called the Maid of Orleans. In certain companies, even in the case of Rape, the victim is excluded from the group. What is particularly serious when the solidarity of the group is important and even vital. That occurs in companies traditionalists, in which filiation is very important: with a sexual relationship out of the group, the blood from abroad can be introduced into the group. Thus, the exclusion of the woman, even not enclosure and even violated, is the only means of guaranteeing the purity of the blood of the group.
A certain valorization of the sexual experiment before the marriage, and the relaxation of the traditional rules, made almost disappear this virginity wanted before the marriage. The philosophy which followed May-68, the facility to look after itself (with antibiotics), the arrival of contraceptives, the emancipation of the women are concomitant with this liberation movement sexual.
Extreme forms go until castration like the Eunuque S, the Castrat S and others.
The technique of in vitro fertilization allows the reproduction without coitus.
Control
The Platonic love, is often presented like an admirable act of self-control on the natural impulse of the sex or only within the framework of the reproduction.Criticisms indicate that this type of oppression leads to in particular social behavioral problems.
The installation of a Ceinture of chastity puts on the body of the woman a physical obstacle in the passing of the penis. For the man, there exist similar devices called Cage of chastity, which prevent erection, the penetration and the contacts.
Religion
In certain religions whose roman catholics, the celibacy and the abstinence are necessary priests and monks. The members of the Church of Jesus-Christ of the Saints of the Last Days (usually called Mormon) as well as the Pilot of Jéhovah, must abstain from sexual relationships prémaritales and extra-marital. They obey the law of the chastity which prohibits any sexual activity apart from the marriage.
Oral sex
Some consider that the Cunnilingus and the Fellation are not sexual relationships, and are thus within the framework of chastity. One joined the traditional function of chastity: to guarantee an unquestionable filiation. Thus, the Catholic church does not regard the oral sex as sexual abstinence.
Sexual abstinence and natural contraception
The abstinence has many significances. This term is used in contraception to indicate the use of certain strategies in order to prevent a possible pregnancy.
The abstinence is the simplest form of contraception. If sperm does not arrive in contact with the ovule, there does not exist risk of pregnancy.
This term can indicate a total abstinence of any sexual activity for one period defined as during the fertile days of the female cycle or the abstinence of some practical sexual being able to be fertilizing. The abstinence in contraception can indicate the fact of abstaining from any sexual relation putting the penis near the vagina and of replacing the pénétrative activity (with penetration) by other sexual means of expression.
The abstinence is effective means of contraception, but a means which requires of two partners a common will, essential comprehension of the human body, and a good communication between the two partners in order to arrive at sexual satisfaction without fertilizing. The abstinence is not an abstinence of the sexual pleasure.
Only, the total abstinence can prevent pregnancy and protects from the sexually transmitted diseases. It is a practice spread before puberty. After puberty, it is a choice of behavior which can be limited in time (chastity before the marriage for example) or unlimited (religious reasons as in the nuns or the priests).
