Severus Rogue is a fictitious character of the saga Harry Potter, written by J.K. Rowling. The author makes of it for the first time mention in the volume 1, in chapter 7.
It is a very cold character with the fatty and black hair, the hooked nose and the waxy dye. The Mark of Darkness figure on its left front armlever but is not always clearly visible. It often carries a long cape and a coat blacks. It is a specialist in potions and also excellent a Occlumens/Legilimens.
The nature of its exact honesty (towards Voldemort or Dumbledore) is a question, only solved at the any end of the saga, which was a subject of great controversy for the fans.
It is incarnated with the cinema by the English actor Alan Rickman.
Rogue made its studies with Poudlard at the same time as James Potter, Sirius Black, Remus Lupin, Peter Pettigrow and Lily Evans. It belonged to the house Serpentard. It was a brilliant pupil, particularly in potions (of which it improved a great number, he also invented magic spells), Harry could realize some besides while inheriting involuntarily its handbook of potions. During all their schooling, Rogue and James Potter were in conflict. James Potter and his friends had certain leaning for the mockery and Rogue often made the expenses of them. The most outstanding episode is the cruel joke which makes Sirius Black in Rogue, when it encourages it to borrow the passage under the Willow Bruiser to go in the refuge of Lupin, in transformation during full moon. It is in James Potter, conscious that Rogue risks its life in the meeting with the werewolf, that it must have the safe life. It has seemed that Rogue dedicates, for this moment a tough hatred with James Potter and his friends, hatred which he defers on Harry.
After its studies, Severus Rogue served Voldemort during a certain time. It is him which, by espionnant professor Dumbledore, heard part of the prophecy of Sybille Trelawney, and brought back it to the Lord. But some time before the murder of Potter and the fall of Voldemort, it was turned over, at least apparently. It was collected, and forgiven by the professor Dumbledore in circumstances which remain however very mysterious, within the school of sorcery Poudlard. No one does not know which event of its past ( to see paragraph “revelations of the 7th volume” ) made it possible Rogue to gain as much respect near the director, but it is clear that this one gave to Rogue one second chance, as it did with so many others. Dumbledore publicly defended it during the lawsuit of Karkaroff in the Eighties, recalling that Rogue was a spy with his pay (Rogue already had been considered and cleared). To note that in volume 3, professor Flitwick had specified that Dumbledore laid out of several spies, including one among Mangemorts, one of them having prevented that Potter were aimed.
Severus Rogue occupies the post of professor of potions with Poudlard. Moreover, he is the director of the house Serpentard. However, since its arrival at the school, its sharpest wish was to occupy the post of professor of Defense Against the Forces of the Evil, which it finally obtained at the time of its last year of teaching. He teaches in one of the dungeons of Poudlard. It is a professor cold and scorning who can be made respect by the intimidation. He seems to test indulgence only for the pupils of Serpentard and mine actively the efforts of the pupils of Gryffondor. He particularly likes to be caught some in Harry, but also with Hermione Granger and Neville Londubat, which fears it more than whoever.
The chapter entitled the account of the Prince , Harry enters the memories that Rogue entrusted to him before dying: several scenes ravel and make it possible to include/understand the nature of the relations between Severus Rogue and Lily Evans-Potter, the mother of Harry.
Child, Severus lived close to the sisters Lily and Pétunia Evans. He was accustomed to observing them until the day when he explains to Lily that she is a witch, well before she receives his letter of Poudlard. The second scene shows Severus learning with Lily the rules from the world of the wizards. They apparently became close since Lily asks to him whether his/her parents still dispute. The two children then surprise Pétunia which espionnait them behind a tree. It is clear that she does not like Severus, which returns well it to him. Another scene shows the deterioration of the relations between Lily and its Pétunia sister since the arrival in their life of Severus, even if it is learned that Pétunia wrote a letter with Dumbledore to be able to accompany his/her sister with Poudlard (the director sent a polished answer besides to him to explain its refusal).
The following scene on board the Poudlard Express train watch Severus and Lily which are made cause by James Potter and Sirius Black. Then the distribution sends Lily to Gryffondor, under the disappointed eyes of Severus, which is him placed at Serpentard. The following memory always occurs to Poudlard, of the years later. Although they are regarded as better friends, Lily disputes with Severus about its frequentations with pupils poured in the black magic, and who will become futures mangemorts. The Rogue young person hates James and seems to fear with bitterness that Lily can appreciate “ this large hero of arrogant Quidditch ”. The following memory then shows the continuation of the “worse memory of Rogue” (chapter of the Order of the Phoenix). In middle of the night, Severus absolutely makes a point of being excused at Lily which is in anger against him, not only because of the insult, but because it knows that he attends Mangemorts and that he will join the rows of Voldemort. Rogue holds still to excuse and when she asks him why she is different in her eyes of the others “blood-of-bourbe” which he scoffs openly, he can only answer and Lily from goes away while looking it with contempt.
One discovers then how Rogue betrayed Voldemort to become the agent of Dumbledore. In 1981, whereas it is with the service of Voldemort, it contacts Dumbledore to make him a request: it understood that prophecy that it heard aims at the son of Lily Potter. Severus Rogue acknowledges to have required of its Master to save the life of Lily, but fears that it does not pass in addition to his request and kills the mother to arrive at the child. It is in full state of shock when it entreats Dumbledore to do everything to protect Potter. In exchange, Rogue integrates the rows about the Phoenix. Some time later, Lily dies by protecting Harry. In the office of Dumbledore, Severus cries its death. He promises in Dumbledore to help it to protect Harry Potter for the love from Lily, but makes him promise never not to reveal, especially with Harry, the reason of its treason with Voldemort.
It is discovered how, throughout the years of Harry with Poudlard, Rogue was faithful to its promise, although he hates Harry because of his bad memories of James. Of the school beginning of the year 1997, Dumbledore requires of Rogue to kill it, at the proper time, to protect its cover and to preserve the Drago young person. Rogue accepts. Later, it is in anger against Dumbledore when this one reveals to him that Harry, the last horcruxe, will have to die with the hand of Voldemort. When the director asks to him whether it is a mark of affection towards Harry, it answers “ Him? ” and shows the form of sound patronus: it is a hind, like was that of Lily.
During all these years, although he always scorned Harry, Rogue put its life in danger to protect it for Lily, because he always liked it. Before dying, killed by the Nagini snake on order of Voldemort, he asks Harry - which has the green eyes of his/her mother - to look at it, like having a last vision of Lily.
For Harry, knowledge that Rogue always liked his/her mother constitutes one of the keys to kill Voldemort. The fact that Rogue did not betray Dumbledore explains why Voldemort is not the Master of the rod of Elder tree: indeed, to be a Master about it, it should have been taken of force to its former owner: however Rogue killed Dumbledore on the orders of this last.
In the epilog, happening 19 years later, Harry explains to his/her son Albus Severus - who is afraid that the distribution of Choixpeau sends it to Serpentard - that it was named thus in the honor “of two directors of Poudlard”, of which one was of Serpentard and undoubtedly “ the most courageous man that I ever knew ”.
Harry Potter and the goblet of fire:
Another time, whereas they were going to begin a course, they is stopped by Malefoy. During one moment, Rogue is thus absent and Harry, which it suspect to be still Mangemort, enters its pensine, hoping there to discover what the Master of the Potions with to hide to him. He falls into a being held memory in Poudlard and discovers a Severus young person, who is made persecute by the arrogant James Potter and haughty Sirius Black. When Lily - which with the air to hate James intervenes in his favor, Rogue treats it " blood-of-bourbe". When Rogue surprises Harry in its pensine, it enters an alarming rage and throws it out of the dungeon while prohibiting to him to give the feet there. It is the term with the lessons of Occlumancie.
During meetings about the Phoenix, Rogue does not cease causing Sirius on the fact that there remain " tranquillement" with 12, Square Grimmaurd, whereas its life risks to him by espionnant Voldemort.
Happens in 1996, Rogue resumed its work of spy among the Mangemorts, Voldemort trusts him again. Its qualities of Occlumens make that Voldemort cannot know what he really thinks. It saves the life of Dumbledore by looking after its hand wounded by the horcruxe. It agrees to lend an Inviolable Oath with the mother of Malefoy, swearing “to protect his Drago son, to stop it in its mission if the danger becomes too large and to achieve its mission in its place if it had suddenly failed”. At the end of the book, in the tower full with mangemorts, Severus Rogue finds Albus Dumbledore, which begs it for a reason which will appear very important “Severus please…”. Rogue kills Albus Dumbledore, before fleeing with Drago. Harry Potter, which was in the tower, launches out to the continuation of Rogue and treats it of coward. Rogue answers violently and its face expresses a pain without name.
The question of the camp of Rogue was an intense subject of controversy among the readers. It is this year that Harry found the old book of potions of Rogue, the “Prince of mixed blood”.
Harry Potter and Relics of Dead the:
At the end of June 1998, during the battle of Poudlard, in the Howling Hut, Voldemort orders “with regret” with Nagini to kill Rogue, thus thinking of making itself main of the capacity of that the Rod of Elder tree (or Stick of Dead), one of the three Relics of Death. Harry, which attends the murder, hidden under its cape of invisibility with Hermione and Ron, is revealed after the departure of Voldemort. Especially with the anguish, Rogue entrusts its memories to him which enable him to reveal its true allegiance and to give the keys of the victory against Voldemort. In an ultimate effort, he asks Harry to look at it and Severus Rogue dies by looking at the eyes which resemble those of Lily so much.
It is learned, in the memories that it bequeaths to Harry, that Dumbledore did not have any more that one year to be lived following the mortal fate of Horcrux. It owes this deferment with the intervention of Rogue which succeeded in containing the fate in its hand. Condemned, it made promise in Rogue to kill it when time would have come. By simulating the murder, Rogue saves to the Drago young person the mission that Voldemort entrusted to him. It is besides this subject which is the cause of the argument between Rogue and Dumbledore that surprised Hagrid had (during the sixth year of Harry), which had included/understood only with half.
In the epilog, nineteen years later, Harry and Ginny lead their three children James, Lily and Albus Severus Potter, on the way 9 3/4. Albus Severus, which returns in first year, is afraid that the choixpeau does not send it to Serpentard, Harry says to him whereas it was fore-mentioned thus in homage to two directors of Poudlard, of which one was Serpentard and also undoubtedly the most courageous man that it ever knew.
July 30th, 2007, JK Rowling answered has questions of fans about the site of Bloomsburry. Here those which related to Rogue: was
the absence of the portrait of Rogue in the office of the director of Poudlard, in the last scene, innocent or deliberated?
JKR: It was deliberated. Rogue gave up its station before dying, therefore it does not deserve to appear in this majestic gallery. But I like to think that Harry will make so that the portrait of Rogue appears there with final…
do you think that Rogue is a hero?
JKR: Yes, I think, but an imperfect hero. An anti-hero, perhaps. He is not a very pleasant man in many fields. There remains rather cruel, rough filled of bitterness - and yet he liked, he was honest, and, to finish, he sacrificed his life for this love. It is rather heroic! did
Lily have feelings for Rogue?
JKR: Yes. She liked it like a friend, and she could even have liked it “romantiquement” if it had not been also attracted by the black magic and all that surrounds it… does
the world of the wizards know that Rogue was the man of Dumbledore, or they always think that it is a traitor?
JKR: Harry made so that the heroism of Rogue is known. Of course, that will not prevent in Rita Skeeter from writing: " Rogue: gangster or saint? "
Lily hated Mulciber and Avery. If Rogue really liked it, why didn't it sacrifice their company for his?
JKR: It is all the tragedy of Rogue. If it were to remake its life, it would not have become Mangemort. But like much of weak and vulnerable people, like Queudver, he became member of something of large, powerful and impressive. He wanted Lily, and he wanted also Mulciber. He forever really included/understood the aversion of Lily, he was plugged so much by the black magic which he thought that Lily would find impressive that he becomes Mangemort.
OJ, thank you for these incredible books! I would like to know why nobody seemed to know about the friendship between Lily and Rogue with Poudlard. They met well to however discuss. Did James know their past?
JKR: Thank you for your thanks! Yes, it was of public notoriety which they were friendly, then that they ceased being it. Nobody knew some any more. James always suspecté Rogue to have major feelings for Lily, which explains part of its behavior towards Rogue.
Pourquoi Rogue was it if not very neat?
JKR: Mmh. Good question. Problem of vision? Perhaps was it looked in the mirror by thinking that it was beautiful such as it was? I think rather than it attached value to others of its qualities. was
Rogue only Mangemort with being able to produce complete Patronus?
JKR: Yes, because Patronus are used against Détraqueurs, whether Mangemorts create or at the sides of which they fight. They do not need Patronus.
Comment Rogue did it hide its Patronus with the remainder of the Order?
JKR: It paid attention not to use Patronus like means of communication with them. It was not very difficult, because considering its station within the Order - spy to send Patronus to any of the members of the Order could have betrayed it. did
How Rogue enter 12, Square Grimmaurd to recover 2nd half of the letter, if there were enchantments for preventing some?
JKR: Rogue entered the Grimmaurd Public garden right after the death of Dumbledore, before Maugrey does not set up the fates against him.

Thus, Rogue, undoubtedly the most enigmatic character of all the saga Harry Potter, reveals at the any end of the novel the mystery of the apparently contradictory actions which it carried out.
After its death, Harry and the reader include/understand all the depth of the personality of Rogue: badly liked and pushed back since childhood, he responsible for died for his best friend, Lily Evans (which he liked), which he will never forgive himself. To repurchase itself, it will protect Harry (although it hates the young boy because this one resembles too much James Potter, that he hated), and this against its own ideals (the superiority of the " blood purs").
Rogue has an extraordinary force of spirit: it completely makes a success of with bluffer the Lord of Darkness. He arrived to not flancher whereas, as a very implied double agent, each camp takes it for a traitor, at least until the death of Dumbledore. From this event, which it traumatize - as shows it its lunatic reaction the night even murder when Harry treats it of coward it is continued with died by the Order of the Phoenix and jalousé by Mangemorts, which hardly likes its apparent " proximité" with Voldemort.
Finally, this deep character with the wasted life will have a decisive role in the victory of Harry, but will never have the recognition of its acts of alive sound. It is only well after its death that Harry, while giving its name to its second wire, will pay homage to Severus Rogue, that he had hated so much before admiring it.
Rehabilitated thereafter, he remains the tragic character of the novel.
In English, his name is Severus Snape. Severus comes from Latin (severus, has, um) who means severe, hard. One can also bring it closer to the English verb to sever (to cross, to break). In the same way, its name (Snape) approaches to the verb to snap (to break Net, claquer, to make fun, bite, ronchonner), to the verb to snipe (to criticize somebody by in lower part or cunningly), and the noun snake (snake). These significances correspond to its character, always prompt with the sarcastic remark and the mockeries. But the true origin of the name Snape is the name of a town of England, and also that of a known person of J.K. Rowling.
Rogue, the French-speaking translation of the name, vaguely has a relationship with English rogue, who means “gredin”, “scélérat”, “rascal”, “recluse” or “mischievous”. In French, it means “full with mortuary”, “stiff and hard”, “arrogant”.
