Seven Churches of Asia
The seven Churches of Asia or seven Churches of the Apocalypse are seven communities diocésaines mentioned in the Livre of the Apocalypse in the New Testament. The episcopal sees were located in minor Asia, today in Turkey.
In the book of the revelations, Jean quotes the Lord who says to him: what you see, write it in a book, and sends it to the seven Churches, Éphèse, in Smyrna, in Pergame, Thyatire, Sardes, in Philadelphia, and Laodicée .
The seven Churches are with:
-
Éphèse (see Church of Marie)
- Smyrna
- Pergame
- Thyatire
- Sardinian (see Seat of Sardinians)
- Philadelphia
- Laodicée (see church of Laodicée)
Each Church had its own bishop and his own cathedral. Some councils were held in these places like the Concile of Éphèse or the Concile of Laodicée. Some bishops of these Churches are known to us, like Méliton de Sardes and Polycrate d' Éphèse.
