Setter Gordon

The Setter Gordon is a Gun dog to the stop of stock Ecossaise, discoverer of game birds, the last born of the Setter S.

History

Resulting at the origin as for all Setters, of Spanish spaniel which was introduced in France about the 14th century, to spread itself thereafter in British Isles. About Setter Gordon, one supposes that it would have been crossed with Irish Setter, English Setter of Blood-Hound and perhaps of the Colley. Until the 18th century, these dogs were called " dogs couchants" because they directed the birds towards the nets of the hunters. It is the fourth Duke of Gordon, Alexander, which improved this variety. With its death, the breeding continued to open out thanks to Georges, fifth Duke and Setters of the Castle of Gordon became extremely famous for their aptitudes for work as for the attraction of their beauty. Setter Gordon was named during one century " Setter Black and Tan" in connection with its black dress and fire. It is only into 1924 that this variety was officially called " Setter Gordon" by Kennel English Club in memory of its innovator Alexander Gordon and his descendants, which marked this splendid race forever.

Characteristics

Physical features

Setter Gordon is a dog of robust and massive construction. Thanks to the exceptional strength of its framework and the agility of its members, that in made a dog resistant to tiredness and very effective. It is known as of him, that he is the giant of the race of Setters and he is often compared with a " Hunter" (obstacle and hunter, its pace and its swaying gallop. Slower than these first cousins, it harmonious, elegant and is very distinguished in spite of its heavier silhouette. Its dress is black with tasks of color fire (maroon turkey) at well delimited places. Its size is of 66 cm to the garrot for the males with a weight of 30 kg. and 63 cm with the garrot for the females with a weight of 25 kg. Its longevity can go up to 14 years.

Character

Very faithful, it achieves the unanimity of the family which it protects in " assembling the garde" no matter what its action rather tries to prevent that to act. Balanced, affectionate, friendly and become inveterate player, it particularly appreciates the children with whom it is very accessory. Sportsman, it adores the hiking, with horse, bicycle, in rollers, with ski touring, in rackets etc what it appreciates much is swimming. He can be calm and balanced at the house, while overflowing of energy outside. Very sensitive it does not support brutality and ignorance. Of sturdy character despite everything, it can be obstinate, stubborn person and persevering, all qualities of a good gun dog to the stop where it can become the best accomplice of the hunter which can include/understand it and adapt to it. Its overflowing energy request " at least " one hour of activity per day.

Education

With Setter Gordon, the things must be clear, it is yes or it is not, it is allowed or it is defended, not half-measure. To use softness, the plays, the compliments, the reward, while being firm and demanding, are the assets of the success. To employ the same words to give the orders, to have much patience and to be somewhat a psychologist when with the faults of the dog, because they can be often caused by the human one!
