Settat

Settat (Arab: سطات) is a city of the Morocco, capital of the area of the Chaouia and prefecture of the Province of Settat. It located at 57 km of Casablanca, on the road of Marrakech. Its population was of: 116570 inhabitants in 2004.

History of the city

While choosing to build the Kasbah on the undulating site of Settat, Moulay Ismaïl was going to start the process of Urbanisation of this site. Indeed, the construction of the Kasbah brought order and safety as well to the travellers as to the inhabitants and supported the human establishments with its accesses. Much more, by installing there the first Caïd of this area which depended before on Caïd Doukkali and Rahmani, Moulay Ismaïl officialized Settat like chief town of this area.

The town of Settat became an administrative center at the beginning of the 13th century, because of its strategic position as a passage impossible to circumvent between the South and North. Thanks to the richness of the ground, it thrived and constituted during 18th and 19th centuries an important center of trade of the agricultural produce, attracting populations strong undertaking. It was the case of the Marocains of confession Juive which settled there in mass at the 19th century, building their own district, the Mellah, with the accesses of the Kasbah.

This development was disturbed at the beginning of the 20th century during the period of the Siba (anarchy) and by the Colonisation which savagely opposed the tribes of the Chaouia rejoined Moulay Hafid. Under French protectorate, the town of Settat experienced an urban development without precedent, as testifies some the boom demographic that it known to 1913 with 1925 and thus joined again with its commercial past. This prosperity lasted until the beginning of the year fifty where, under the effect of the development of Casablanca, the transportation routes and the means of transport, the town of Settat and other agglomerations of the area entered during one time of Semi-lethargy.

With the beginning of the year 1990, it was equipped with a university, a course of international Golf as well as Hippodrome. Settat completed great work of Urbanisme as from the years 1970 to become an important regional center. The industrial sector develops to with it with one of the industrial parks most dynamic of the Moroccan territory. Settat is connected to Casablanca (57 km) since 2001 by a7 highway, and to Marrakech (146 km) since 2007.
