The set of ladies is a Board game combinative abstract for two players. The play of lady is the most complex play has to be solved. If the 2 players play perfectly, the result of the part ends in null.

The American writer Edgar Allan Poe regarded it as the king of the plays.

Goal of the play

To capture or immobilize the parts of its adversary.

Material

  • 2 players
  • a checkerwork; the traditional checkerwork is a apron of 10 boxes out of 10 of two alternate colors (traditionally the boxes are black and white)
  • two teams of 20 pawns.

An important alternative of the set of ladies is played on a chess-board (64 boxes), each camp having 12 pawns. This alternative called checkers is mainly played in the anglophone world. The rules are slightly different, the lady (which they call king ) cannot carry out long jumps. Since 2007, this alternative was entirely solved by " Chinook" , a computer which worked since more than one decade with this spot. It is unbeatable but does not gain forcing a gaining position! Another alternative, called “Canadian play”, is exploited a checkerwork of 144 boxes, while complying with the same rules as the play with 100 boxes.

Preparation

The checkerwork is laid out so that the box in bottom on the left is dark color.

Each player places his pawns on the boxes of dark color. Before beginning a part, there will be thus two lines in the middle of the checkerwork which will be empty and separate the two camps.

In fact the White begin , as with the failures, and contrary with Othello, or the Jeu of go.

How to play (and to gain)

Displacement

The pawns move on the diagonals, from the player towards the unfavourable player. They move only one box at the same time safe when there is a catch (lower cf).

The catch

When a close box on the diagonal is occupied by a pawn of the unfavourable player, and that there is a free box behind, this pawn can be jumped. It is thus taken and removed play.

The moved pawn can capture several pawns as from the moment when it can be posed on the checkerwork between two catches.

A catch can be carried out forwards or backwards.

The rule “to blow is not to play” was abolished in 1911: when you can take, you must take, whatever the consequences. If there are several ways of carrying out one or more catches, the rule of the quantity must be applied: it is necessary to carry out the possible maximum of catches.

Promotion

Promotion takes place when a pawn reached the last line: this one becomes automatically a lady then. It is of use to superimpose two pawns to represent a lady.

However, if a pawn has suddenly passed to the top of the last line during an adapter, it does not become a lady that if it finishes the raid on a box of promotion.

The lady

The operation of the lady

The lady can move in all the directions as from the moment when it follows the diagonals.

The lady takes as the pawn but with the advantage of being able to cross several empty boxes.

At the time of an adapter, it is interdict to withdraw the parts taken progressively raid. They should be removed, in the order of the catch, once the lady posed. This point is important because it makes possible the realization of a trap says “Turkish blow”, making it possible to take the unfavourable lady.

Lastly, the lady can stop, after its last catch, on the box of its choice, so of course it has several free boxes.

In the alternative known as “Checkers” played on 64 boxes (majority of the plays available on Internet ), the lady can move only one box at the same time (as a normal pawn) but has the privilege to be able to move, and take, behind.

The Manoury notation

In order to represent the played blows, and thus to note a part, the boxes used of the checkerwork are numbered from 1 to 50. On the basis of the side of the Blacks from left to right, one numbers, and from top to bottom.

An indent “-” represents a simple displacement and a cross “X” represents a catch. The movements of the Blacks are indicated between brackets. Example: If the White play 36-31, the Blacks can pionner by (17-22). In the case of an adapter, one indicates each box of stop. As with the failures, one can annotate a skilled of a Point exclamation and bad of a Question mark.
