This article treats serial killer like his stereotype, expression coming directly from the English serial killer .

Qualification

As a serial killer a fatal recidivist is regarded which made at least three murders, an time interval - of a few days to several years - separating each one from these murders. A serial killer is a Psychopathe which is characterized by its bulimia of murder, by the Plaisir that it draws from his acts and by a feeling of superiority which leads it to think that it will never be taken. Serial killer kills not by Ideology (even if it can sometimes select its victims on ethnic, religious or sexual criteria), by Fanatisme or lure of gain. The engine of the serial killer is the feeling of any power which its crimes get to him.

Taking into consideration this definition, the terrorist , the war criminal , the killers of mass, the Spree killer S, the killers passion or the hired killers are not regarded as being serial killers.

Typology of action

A serial killer proceeds with method and control perfectly the situation. He can commit his crimes during years before being taken. By opposition, a spree killer is a Psychotique which acts impulsively and kills to him also several people in different places but in a relatively short amount of time. Contrary to the serial killers, the spree killers are in general quickly put out of state to harm.

Among the serial killers, one finds serial snipers , which use preferably a Firearm with any other means to kill their victims.

Stereotype

The scenario writers of cinema took again the figures of the serial killer in a whole range of films of horror, police officers, of Slasher movies and thriller S.

The stereotype of the killer who unchains violence in the civilized company is however more one evocation of the " Berserker " strapping and sanguinary imbu violence without limits, that serial killers of the real life.

These characters provide the Méchant basic easily (as could make it very well machiavelic the Génie of the evil ) because their protagonism justifies the violent action on behalf of the hero, so as to turn over to a public space pacified once the redemption by their elimination took place.

The berserkers are thus obliged figures of the violent cinema of action: they bring back to the perception of the nonnegotiable fight Civilisé/Barbare.

There is another stereotype of serial killer: that which plans its murders with great intelligence and by signing them in a very esoteric way. He is opposed to the barbarian killer with the fact that he will not kill spontaneously on his passage, and it is its tracking which is the subject of the history, direct confrontation being secondary.
