This Soviet pilot was the largest Ace of the USSR of the period which preceded the Second world war.

Its career

Born the July 19th 1909 in Borovsky, in the area of Brest, in the USSR, it joined dice 1931 the rows of the Red Army . Pilot graduate in 1932 at the air military academy of Orenburg, it followed the courses of the school of aerial combat of Odessa in 1936.

To spring 1938 it was sent in China and there gained, the April 29th, its 1° victory, a Japanese apparatus shot down above the town of Hanchow. As of June of the same year, 1938, it went voluntary for the Spain under " to advise soviétique" near republican aviation; in less than 6 months, from July to December, it allocated 30 approved victories to it. Promoted Major, it was to take there the command of the 5° escadrilla of caza (= fighter squadron).

Of return in the USSR, it went again voluntary, this time for the Mongolia, where the Japanese threat was specified day in day. During the combat of Khalkin-Gol, June to September, placed at the head of the 70 I.A.P. (=régiment of air hunting), team of I-16 " Ratas" , it cut down 12 Japanese planes, including 1 in co-operation with another pilot.

It was to find death, the September 16th 1939, at the time of a collision on the ground, during a takeoff, on the aerodrome of Bolbasovo.

It was titular of 42 victories approved , of which 41 individual and 1 in co-operation , of which
  • 1 in China (April 1938)
  • 30 in Spain (July-décmbre 1938)
  • 11 in China (June-September 1939)

Its Decorations

  • It was one of the first member elects of a double title of Héros of the Soviet Union, dignity which it accepted in February and August of the same year: 1939.
  • It accepted moreover 2 times the Ordre of Lénine and a Ordre of the Red Flag.
