Sergueï Vladimirovitch Iliouchine (in Russian: СергейВладимировичИльюшин), born the 18 March 30th 1894 with Dilialevo close to Vologda - died the February 9th 1977 with Moscow, was a Soviet engineer which designed many planes and founded the research department ''' Iliouchine '''.

Biography

It was interested in aviation since 1910. Incorporated since 1914, it accepted a training of pilot during the First World War.

As of 1919 it joined the rows of the Red Army lately created. It was useful as mechanic for planes during the civil war which followed. In 1921, it turned over to its studies which it finished in 1926 with the military academy of aeronautics Prof NR. J. Joukovski of Moscow after having worked on some projects of sailplanes. It took again service in the army like advising and directed as from 1931 its own research department. After being itself devoted some time to the balloons of research in high-altitude, it developed the apparatus ZBK-30 (ZBK = central research department) which was renamed later Iliouchine It-4 and beat several world records.

Its It-2 Sturmovik of attacks on the ground and bombers It-4 were used with large scales during the Second world war. Then, the airliners It-18 and It-62 were largely employed.

Its first great success came in 1939 with the fighter Iliouchine It-2. Returned peace, it built civil aircrafts such as the Iliouchine It-12 (first flight in 1946) and some bombers.

His/her son, Vladimir Iliouchine, is a known test pilot.

  • Middle-distance four-engine turboprop jet: Iliouchine It-18 (1956)
  • Long-distance four-jet aircraft: Iliouchine It-62 (1962)
  • One of the largest transport aircraft in the world: the four-jet aircraft Iliouchine It-76 Candid (payload 164 T, 1971).

Decorations

It was named professor with the Academy Joukovski as from 1948. In 1967, it was high at the rank of engineer-general and the following year elected official member of the Academy of Science of the USSR. He was appointed with the Supreme Soviet of 1st with the 7th legislature.

He was decorated eight times with the Ordre of Lénine, seven times prize winner of the price of the State of the Soviet Union (1941, 1942,1943,1946,1947,1950,1952) and he was decreed to him by three times the medal of the Héros of socialist work (1941, 1957 and 1974).
